About the Location

A Park's Journey

Situated in Oakland's Sobrante Park neighborhood, Tyrone Carney Park is a modest triangular green space with a story that runs deeper than its size might suggest. Created in 1968, this park honors the memory of Tyrone Edward Carney, a 20-year-old Marine who gave his life serving in Vietnam on June 9th of that same year.

The park's journey hasn't been without challenges. During the 1980s, it unfortunately became a hotspot for drug activity, prompting the city to install fencing around the perimeter in an attempt to curb crime. This led to the space being closed to the public for many years - a sad chapter for a place meant to bring community together.

New Beginnings

Like many urban spaces, Tyrone Carney Park is getting a second chance. In recent years, the East Oakland Neighborhoods Initiative (EONI) has partnered with Oakland's Public Works department to breathe new life into this corner of the community.

The revival began taking shape in 2017, when community meetings led to a grant proposal for a complete park renovation. As of 2023, the city has officially designated the space as an Urban Active Mini Park within the Open Space Zone classification - a technical way of saying this small but significant space is recognized for its potential to serve active community use.

Looking Forward

Exciting changes are on the horizon for this long-overlooked space. The renovation plans include fresh play equipment, thoughtfully designed walking paths, and a welcoming plaza featuring ornamental paving. A dedicated lawn area will provide room to relax or play, while a special memorial to Tyrone Carney will honor the park's namesake and his sacrifice.

If you're planning to visit, note that these improvements are coming in phases, with construction set to begin in Winter 2024-2025. The community can look forward to a re-dedication ceremony in late Summer or early Fall 2025 - a moment that will mark not just the completion of a renovation project, but the reclaiming of an important community space.
