About the Location
A Pocket of Oakland History
Tucked between Grand Avenue and Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland, Splash Pad Park carries a story that flows back to the late 19th century. This little green sanctuary once bordered the furthest reaches of Lake Merritt, forming part of the larger Lakeside Park before Highway 580 carved through the landscape in the 1960s. Those mid-century changes brought the concrete-lined pond with splashing water that inspired the park's playful name.
Saved by Its Neighbors
The late 1990s almost saw this community space transformed into yet another commercial development - but Oakland residents weren't having it. The Splash Pad Neighborhood Forum rallied to protect their cherished park, turning potential loss into opportunity for renewal.
Enter landscape architect Walter Hood, whose vision breathed new life into the space. When the redesigned park opened in October 2003, it unveiled a central gathering area with warm wooden paving and illuminated surfaces. Perhaps most delightful is the water wall with sparkling jets that continues the park's splashy tradition.
Natural Beauty by Design
Navigating the park feels intuitive thanks to small interconnecting walkways that also link to the commercial area tucked under the freeway.
If you're a plant enthusiast, don't miss the California Native Community Garden. What started as a modest planting in 2003 has flourished under volunteer care, expanding into a showcase of indigenous plants that bring both beauty and ecological benefits to this urban space.
Where Community Comes Alive
Saturdays transform Splash Pad Park into a bustling hub as it hosts Oakland's largest weekly farmers' market. This East Bay site attracts many visitors with its fresh produce, colorful flower stalls, and diverse food vendors representing Oakland's multicultural character.
The market often features live music that adds to the already lively atmosphere. Many people grab something delicious from a vendor and find a spot in the park to savor both their food and the moment.
Beyond market days, the park connects to the historic Grand Lake Theater and links to Lake Merritt's larger green space. Its lakeside setting makes it ideal for people-watching or simply taking a breath amid city life.
Fun for All Ages
Playground facilities make this a go-to spot for families with young children looking to burn some energy on the play structures.
Many visitors combine their park time with a rejuvenating walk around nearby Lake Merritt. Come winter, you might even stumble upon seasonal activities, including a Christmas tree lot that brings holiday spirit to the space.
