About the Location

Monument and Artwork

At the heart of this park stands the "Remember Them: Champions for Humanity" monument - a truly impressive bronze sculpture crafted by artist Mario Chiodo. Standing 31 feet high and stretching 52 feet long, this massive artwork was cast from 60,000 pounds of bronze.

The monument showcases 25 diverse historical figures who've made lasting impacts on global peace, freedom, and human rights over the past century and a half. Up close, these sculptures reveal both fine artistic details and the educational message they convey through their representations.

Accessibility Features

One of the thoughtful aspects of this park is its commitment to accessibility. Four specially designed walls allow visually impaired visitors to experience the monument through touch.

These tactile walls feature bronze castings of each champion mounted on granite, complemented by their inspiring quotations in both Braille and large print - making the historical significance accessible to everyone.

Urban Oasis

Though it's not huge - taking up about half a city block - the park offers a peaceful respite from downtown Oakland's energy. You'll often find office workers enjoying lunch breaks here, locals taking a moment to reflect, or visitors learning about the civil rights leaders and humanitarians represented in the monument.

There are some nice grassy patches and benches where you can relax or enjoy a quick picnic. Dogs are welcome too, but be aware that the maintenance can be hit-or-miss depending on when you visit.

Design and Location

The park blends hardscape elements with green spaces, striking a balance between urban design and natural elements. Situated in Oakland's Uptown Arts District, it is a meaningful spot for community connection and historical contemplation.

You'll discover this urban sanctuary right in downtown Oakland's Uptown neighborhood, not far from the Fox Theatre. It's both a functional civic space and a meaningful tribute to some of history's most influential changemakers.
