About the Location
Skate Spot at a Glance
Located in the north end of John Landes Park in Oceanside, California sits a modest concrete playground for board enthusiasts. This compact skatepark has been open to the local skate community since June 2003, and the best part? It won't cost you a dime to ride here.
Despite its humble size, you'll typically find a handful of skaters here during daylight hours. Just plan your sessions accordingly - there's no lighting for after-dark skating, so once the sun sets, the skating stops.
What's There to Ride
Though small, this spot packs in some solid features for practicing your skills. You'll discover a flatrail for testing your balance, a curb for those classic grinds, and a manualpad ideal for working on your manual game. There's also a decent ledge that rounds out the obstacle selection.
The concrete here gets good marks from locals for not being too slick - always a plus when you're trying to stick your landings. While it won't compete with the mega-parks in size, this spot is good for practicing grinds and flatground tricks. Its simplicity actually makes it a great place for younger riders or anyone just starting their skate journey.
Current Status
Heads up! As of November 2023, the skatepark is temporarily closed for renovations. The existing skate area is getting some much-needed improvements, with work expected to continue for a few months.
This renovation is good news, especially since some regulars have mentioned that the current setup is pretty minimal compared to what used to be here. The remodel should breathe new life into this neighborhood spot.
Beyond the Skatepark
John Landes Park isn't just about skating. It's a full-fledged community space with two playgrounds catering to different age groups (clearly marked with age-appropriate signage), both well-maintained and ADA accessible.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the tennis courts in great condition, basketball courts for pickup games, two fenced baseball fields, and expansive grassy areas that regularly host soccer practices and matches.
The park also features a recreation center operating Monday through Friday (9am to 6pm) and a library with children's programming. Keep an eye out for the vibrant mural decorating the recreation center - it adds a nice pop of color to the space.
The Practical Stuff
You'll find plenty of picnic tables across the park, many nestled in shaded spots near the soccer fields, playgrounds, and basketball court. Planning a cookout? BBQ facilities are available for your grilling needs.
When nature calls, you can head to the centrally located restrooms which are kept in decent condition. Parking is plentiful both in the main lot and along two sides of the park, so you shouldn't have trouble finding a spot.
Dog owners will be happy to know the park is dog-friendly, with sidewalk paths and grassy areas great for walking your four-legged friends. There are even convenient dog waste bag stations near the parking lot to help keep the park clean.
