Hart Park
About Hart Park
A Walk Through History
Nestled within the Old Towne Orange Historic District, Hart Park spans a generous 56 acres of community green space. The land was scooped up by the City of Orange back in 1933, officially becoming the first "Orange City Park" in 1934 as part of the federal Works Progress Administration. There's genuine historical significance here - the park has earned its place in the National Register of Historic Places and houses several historic structures that tell stories of decades past. The park's charming bandshell, constructed in 1938, was just the second project built in the park and now comes alive during summer with concerts that bring the community together.
Get Your Game On
If you're looking to burn some energy, Hart Park offers plenty of recreational options. The park has multiple sports fields for baseball, softball, and football - with one particularly well-maintained baseball diamond acting as home field for local teams including Orange Lutheran baseball. You'll also find tennis courts, volleyball courts with actual sand (not that artificial stuff), old-school horseshoe pits, and a basketball court open to everyone.
When summer temperatures climb, the community swimming pool offers a refreshing escape for just $3 per person per session. Adding to the natural beauty, Santiago Creek meanders through the grounds, creating a peaceful water feature. One quirky aspect worth noting is the main parking lot - it's uniquely situated in the paved Santiago Creek bed, sitting about 6-7 feet below the actual park level.
Family-Friendly Spaces
The park features a playground where kids can burn off energy on swings, slides, and various play structures. While the equipment might not be the newest on the block, it's kept clean and offers plenty of swings - always a hit with the younger crowd.
Across the park, you'll discover numerous picnic areas with tables and barbecue grills available on a first-come basis. Planning something bigger? The larger picnic areas can be reserved through the City of Orange for gatherings and events. The mature trees create welcome shade over these spots, making them perfect retreats for family get-togethers even on warmer days.
Community Gathering Spot
Hart Park really shines as a community hub, hosting various events that bring people together year-round. Summer evenings become special with free concerts at the bandshell, drawing locals with picnic blankets and folding chairs. You might also catch sports tournaments, car shows, and other community celebrations year-round. The amphitheater provides a natural venue for performances with surprisingly good acoustics and plenty of space for audiences.
Trails for Days
One of the park's best features is the Santiago Creek Bike Trail that winds through the grounds and connects to other pathways in the area. This network gives cyclists and walkers the opportunity to explore extensively beyond the park's boundaries. With varying terrains and elevations, the trails accommodate different fitness levels - no matter if you're taking a leisurely stroll with your dog or getting in a serious workout.
The Practical Stuff
You can find public restrooms at several locations throughout the park, however cleanliness might vary depending on how busy it's been. Drinking fountains are scattered across the grounds for when you need to hydrate. The unique creek-bed parking arrangement typically offers plenty of spaces, even during busy weekend afternoons. The park welcomes visitors daily from 5 AM to 11 PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy all it has to offer.
Looking Ahead
Exciting changes are coming to Hart Park in 2025. The City of Orange secured $2 million to build new pickleball facilities on the south side, including 10 courts, spectator seating, and various amenities. Plans also include an outdoor fitness circuit, new walkways, and landscaping enhancements that will benefit everyone who visits the park.
