About Granite Regional Park

Park Overview

Located in southeastern Sacramento, Granite Regional Park spans 80.45 acres of recreational space. Located at 8181 Cucamonga Avenue just off Power Inn Road, this spacious park offers activities for both sports enthusiasts and nature lovers.

What's particularly nice about this spot is how its open spaces provide plenty of room to spread out for family gatherings. And if you're looking to escape Sacramento's infamous summer heat, you'll appreciate that many areas stay open into the evening hours.

From Gravel Pit to Green Space

Before becoming the community hub it is today, this land served a completely different purpose as a gravel mine. When Granite Construction Company wrapped up their mining operations, they handed the property over to the City of Sacramento.

In an interesting development arrangement, local firms purchased portions of the site for office buildings and, in exchange, contributed city fees that funded the park improvements we enjoy today.

World-Class Skate Park

If you're into skateboarding, the park features a massive 45,000 square-foot skate park - one of the largest in the country. Designed by award-winning skate park creator Wally Hollyday with input from local skaters, this isn't your average skate spot.

The park features eight bowls that cater to everyone from first-timers to pros, with depths ranging from three to fifteen feet. The street course weaves around the park and includes a spacious plaza area with an impressive variety of features: granite, steel, and concrete edging, boxes, stairs, and rails.

The atmosphere is generally relaxed and respectful, with skaters of all ages and skill levels sharing the space. Young beginners practice alongside more experienced skaters.

Sports Facilities

Soccer fans have plenty to love with three grass fields and one all-weather turf field. These facilities are used by local soccer clubs, recreational leagues, and youth tournaments.

The fields boast quality grass and excellent lighting for evening games. Just be aware that during tournaments, the place transforms into a hub of activity, and parking can get a bit tight.

Furry Friends Welcome

The dedicated dog park provides a space where dogs can run off-leash. When organized sports aren't happening, many people also enjoy exercising with their dogs in the open fields.

The park offers additional recreational options including a horseshoe pit and various picnic areas - some covered - that accommodate both intimate gatherings and larger get-togethers. If you're looking for a scenic lunch spot, try snagging one of the picnic tables near the lake.

Natural Beauty

At the heart of the park, you can find a tranquil pond complete with a fountain, surrounded by turf areas and walkways that make for pleasant strolls. Fishing enthusiasts regularly visit the stocked pond, which becomes especially popular during trout season.

The pond's ecosystem includes water lilies and reeds that provide habitat for local wildlife. You'll likely spot ducks and various bird species making themselves at home here. If you're into photography, this is an excellent spot to capture dragonflies in their element. The thoughtfully placed benches and picnic tables around the water offer perfect vantage points for taking in the peaceful scenery.

Family Fun Zone

The playground offers a variety of equipment for children. Parents can rest easy knowing the play area is well-maintained and offers enough diversity to keep little ones engaged.

The open grassy spaces are fantastic for flying kites when the breeze picks up, and you'll find plenty of shaded spots across the park when you need a break from the sun. With so many recreational options in close proximity, it's easy to spend an entire day here with the family.

Practical Info

When nature calls, you'll discover portable toilets near the soccer fields and activity areas. Fair warning: these facilities aren't always in the best condition, especially during busy times or events.

Parking is generally plentiful, and some areas even feature solar panel-covered spots - a nice touch of environmental consciousness. While parking is typically free for everyday use, you might encounter fees during special events or tournaments.
