About the Location

A Riverside Site With Historical Roots

Perched along the American River just a mile northeast of downtown Sacramento, Sutter's Landing Regional Park spans over 204 acres of outdoor space. It's a convenient escape from city life while still being less than three miles from the State Capitol. The park represents a gateway to the American River Parkway - a 31.5-mile stretch that draws more than 8 million nature enthusiasts every year.

The land has quite a story to tell. Back in August 1839, Captain John A. Sutter landed near this very spot and established what would become the first non-Indian settlement within Sacramento's current city limits. Fast forward to more recent times, and this area took on a completely different role as the 28th Street Landfill, eventually becoming Sacramento's main dump site. Talk about a transformation!

From Landfill to Landmark

In 1984, city officials had the foresight to designate this area for something much more beautiful - a regional park. By 1989, it officially received the name Sutter's Landing Park, honoring its historical significance.

Today, the park blends urban convenience with natural beauty. There are walking and biking trails that connect to the broader American River Parkway, giving you plenty of options for outdoor adventures and wildlife spotting.

The park is still evolving, with ongoing plans to expand and improve the space. Recent years have seen new property acquisitions and updates to the amenities plan, showing the city's commitment to this riverside oasis.

Something for Everyone

Whether you're a skater, a dog lover, or a sports enthusiast, Sutter's Landing offers various recreational options. The park features a dog park with thoughtfully separated areas for small and large four-legged friends. Skateboarders can enjoy the covered skate park (just note that registration and a small fee are required). If basketball is more your style, head over to the basketball courts for a pickup game.

The bocce courts offer a more leisurely athletic option, while the paved multi-use trails are great for walking, jogging, or biking. The park accommodates people of all ages and interests.

Cool Off by the River

The park provides direct access to the American River. On hot Sacramento summer days, there's nothing better than taking a dip in the generally clean waters. The gentle current in certain areas makes it family-friendly, and several small beaches along the shoreline provide perfect spots to relax.

If you're planning to wade in, you'll find areas with soft sandy bottoms that are comfortable underfoot, however water shoes might be a good idea in some spots.

A Haven for Wildlife

The park isn't just for humans - it's also home to a variety of wildlife. Conservation efforts have focused on restoring natural habitats along the river, creating spaces for Swainson's hawks, white-tailed kites, and northern harriers to thrive.

The wooded trails and natural areas make this a surprisingly good spot for birdwatching right in the city. Keep your eyes open while exploring - you never know what creatures you might spot!

Planning Your Visit

Getting here is easy, and parking is free in two lots - one near the bocce courts and another by the skate park. Restroom facilities include flush toilets that are typically well-maintained.

Just a heads up that the park can get busy during summer weekends, especially at the river access points. You might encounter volunteers distributing trash bags to river-goers - they're part of a dedicated group that helps keep the park clean and welcoming.

A Community Effort

Sutter's Landing continues to evolve with input from the Sacramento community. The city regularly seeks feedback to ensure the park's development matches local needs and preferences.

The volunteers you might see are part of a group that contributes to the park's maintenance. Their work helps maintain this riverside space that has transformed from its former landfill days.
