Perris Hill Park
About Perris Hill Park
A Historic Urban Oasis
Set in San Bernardino, Perris Hill Park sprawls across a generous 64.4 acres, making it the city's largest green space. This park isn't just big - it's steeped in history that dates back to the early 1900s when city planners had the foresight to set this land aside for public enjoyment.
The hill got its name in 1910, honoring Fred T. Perris, who served on the city's Board of Water Commissioners. A fitting tribute, considering what lies beneath the surface.
Views That Take Your Breath Away
The panoramic vistas of the San Bernardino Valley and surrounding mountains are quite impressive. The hiking trail to the hilltop is well worth the effort - especially if you time your visit for sunset or after dark when the city lights twinkle below like earthbound stars.
Interestingly, this hill isn't just pretty to look at - it's actually quite practical too. Hidden within Perris Hill is a massive 10-million-gallon underground water reservoir, silently serving the community while hikers tread above.
Sports Through the Decades
The park has some serious athletic credentials. Back in the day, it hosted Major League and Minor League baseball teams, with the Pittsburgh Pirates choosing these grounds for their spring training in the 1930s.
From the 1930s through the 1980s, the tennis courts here were buzzing with activity, attracting several tennis Hall of Famers. Those same courts remain in good shape today, continuing to serve local tennis enthusiasts.
Modern-Day Recreation
Keeping up with the times, Perris Hill Park has evolved its recreational offerings. In December 2020, part of the western tennis area was transformed into eight pickleball courts - a change that's been enthusiastically embraced by players across all skill levels. These courts come complete with permanent lines and nets, all set against a backdrop of mountain scenery.
During the warmer months, the park's swimming pool becomes a refreshing retreat. It features a water slide for the thrill-seekers and a shallow area with a mini slide for the little ones. Parents appreciate the shaded seating areas with tables, and the clean facilities maintained by attentive lifeguards.
Family-Friendly Features
Kids have plenty of space to burn energy at the modern playground, complete with swings and climbing equipment. For family gatherings or a casual outdoor meal, you'll come across numerous picnic areas scattered around the park. Many tables enjoy good shade coverage - a blessing on those hot California days.
The hiking trail circling the hill accommodates various fitness levels. It offers enough incline to count as a workout but isn't so challenging that it excludes beginners. Parts of it are even navigable with a stroller, making it accessible for parents with young children.
A Stage for Community Life
The Roosevelt Bowl, an outdoor amphitheater dedicated in 1935 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt, has been the backdrop for countless community moments. From high school graduations to concerts, theater productions to Easter sunrise services, this venue has seen generations of San Bernardino residents come together.
Perris Hill Park combines natural beauty, recreational facilities, and historical significance in San Bernardino's urban landscape.
