About the Location
A Park with Wings
Located in the northeast corner of Balboa Park in San Diego, Bird Park isn't your average green space. Opened in September 1997, this unique space was designed by local artists Robin Brailsford and Wick Alexander with a creative approach.
When viewed from above, you can see the park's distinctive feature - it's actually shaped like a bird. Pershing Drive creates the "branch" this concrete-and-grass bird perches on, making for a playful design that's both thoughtful and whimsical.
What You'll Find There
Spanning roughly six acres, Bird Park integrates its avian theme throughout the space. Take a stroll along the sidewalks and you'll notice they're stamped with names of bird species native to San Diego - a subtle educational touch that connects visitors with local wildlife while they walk.
The park offers plenty of open grassy areas where you can spread out a blanket, enjoy the breeze, and take in some pretty spectacular views of the surrounding area. It offers a sense of tranquility, despite its urban location.
Things to Do
If you're visiting with kids, there's a nice playground where they can burn off energy. The open fields work perfectly for casual games - you'll often see people setting up volleyball nets or tossing frisbees around on weekends.
Packing a picnic? Bird Park provides a nice setting for sunset picnics. The view of the sunset, with its oranges and pinks, makes for a pleasant evening backdrop. The paths throughout make for a pleasant evening stroll, too.
Community Vibes
Since it opened, Bird Park has become a popular gathering place for the community. Its claim to fame? The Bird Park Summer Concerts that happen on select Saturdays during summer months. These free outdoor music events started back in 2002 and now draw hundreds of locals who come with picnic baskets, blankets, and dancing shoes.
If you're in San Diego for the Fourth of July, consider making your way here - the park offers excellent vantage points for watching Fourth of July fireworks over San Diego Bay. Just arrive early to stake out your spot!
Natural Beauty
True to its name, the park incorporates native plantings and wildflowers that attract local birds, making casual birdwatching a possibility while you relax. Bird Park is actually part of the larger Morley Field Sports Complex, named after John Morley, who served as park superintendent from 1911 to 1939.
You'll discover several benches scattered throughout where you can sit and just enjoy being outdoors - sometimes the simplest pleasures are the best ones.
Good to Know
Street parking is generally easy to find around the park - a rarity in San Diego! If you're bringing your four-legged friend, you're in luck; the park is dog-friendly, however your pup will need to stay on leash.
One thing to note: there aren't any public restrooms here. It's worth planning accordingly, especially if you're thinking of attending one of those summer concerts or spending several hours enjoying the space.
