About the Location
Recreational Facilities
Situated in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego, Park De La Cruz is a 5.3-acre site that's been bringing smiles to locals since 2018. It might not be the biggest park in the city, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in character and thoughtful amenities.
The crown jewel here is undoubtedly the 19,300-square-foot skate park. The skate park is a concrete space that accommodates everyone from beginners to experienced skaters. You'll discover a flow bowl with a spine ramp, a street plaza with all the fixings, an a-frame with gap and rail features, and even a backyard-style pool that feels like you're skating in someone's drained swimming pool (minus the angry homeowner!).
The park cleverly incorporates urban elements like railings, stairs, banks, and ledges - offering many features skaters enjoy. It's considered one of San Diego's better skateparks, appealing to both newcomers and experienced skaters.
Sports and Leisure Areas
Not into skating? No problem! The park offers plenty of other ways to get your heart pumping. There's a well-maintained softball field for those weekend games, an outdoor multipurpose basketball court for shooting hoops, and a popular soccer field where local teams regularly face off.
If you're looking for something more laid-back, the picnic shelters come equipped with grills - well-suited for those family barbecues or casual get-togethers with friends. The spacious grassy areas invite you to spread out a blanket, toss a frisbee, or simply lounge with a good book.
Dog owners, rejoice! Your furry friends are welcome here too, however they'll need to stay on their leashes. It's a pleasant spot for those daily walks when both you and your pup need some fresh air.
Community Center
In 2020, the park welcomed a fantastic addition: the Park De La Cruz Community Center. This 33,000-square-foot facility houses various activities and serves the neighborhood.
Inside, you'll discover a public gymnasium, fitness room, recreation room, and multi-purpose rooms that host a variety of community activities. What makes this center special is its commitment to inclusivity through the City of San Diego's Therapeutic Recreation and AgeWell Services programs.
The center provides a welcoming space for residents with special needs and older adults. There's always something happening - classes designed specifically for seniors, activities that bring people together, and programs that help everyone feel included, regardless of ability.
Accessibility Features
Park De La Cruz features good accessibility throughout the grounds. The park was designed with inclusivity in mind. You'll notice ADA-compliant features throughout, including companion bench seating and observation areas around the skate park.
The park doesn't shut down when the sun goes down, either. Thanks to sports lighting and dedicated skate park illumination, the fun can continue into the evening. This lighting isn't just practical - it helps keep the park safe and welcoming after dark.
Clean restrooms are available around the park, with additional facilities inside the community center during its operating hours - a small detail that makes a big difference, especially for families with young children.
Special Features
Keep an eye out for community events that pop up year-round. From holiday celebrations to family activities, these gatherings showcase the park at its best - as a place where neighbors become friends.
Here's a fun tidbit: there are actually two skateparks in the area. Beyond the main attraction, there's a smaller skatepark tucked away next to a nearby school. Options are always nice!
Park De La Cruz offers a variety of activities in a well-maintained space. Visitors of different ages, abilities, and interests can enjoy the outdoor facilities.
