About the Location

Breathtaking Bay Vistas

Located next to the bayside stretch of Shelter Island, Shoreline Park offers a touch of tranquility in busy San Diego. From this peaceful green space, you can take in sweeping views of San Diego Bay, the city's distinctive skyline, and Coronado across the water. The view during sunset is particularly striking, when the downtown buildings are bathed in golden light.

It's interesting to think that this wasn't always solid ground - Shelter Island started as a humble sandbank only visible at low tide until 1934, when dredged material from the bay transformed it into the peninsula we enjoy today.

What You'll Find Here

The park stretches about a mile with lush grass and includes a small brown sand beach that, while not named, has its own charm. The beach area has several fire pits available on a first-come basis - arriving early is recommended on popular evenings.

Paved pathways wind through the park, fantastic for a leisurely stroll or morning jog with the bay as your companion. Art enthusiasts will appreciate the various statues and public art installations dotting the landscape, including the elegant Japanese Friendship Bell and the poignant Tunamans Memorial honoring San Diego's fishing heritage.

Things to Do

Fishing enthusiasts flock to the public fishing pier extending into the bay. It's well-equipped with a bait and tackle shop, and when hunger strikes, there's a small bistro where you can grab a bite. If boating is more your style, the boat launching ramp makes it easy to get your kayak or watercraft into the bay without hassle.

Families with kids can head to the children's playground with swings and climbing structures. It's on the smaller side and can get busy during weekends and summer days, so a morning visit might be your best bet. Picnic areas with tables are scattered throughout, but we often prefer grabbing a patch of grass for a blanket picnic with bay views.

Around the Park

Shoreline Park sits in the heart of the larger Shelter Island area, surrounded by bobbing boats in marinas and a selection of hotels and restaurants. This makes it easy to extend your visit into a full day of waterfront enjoyment.

One major plus: parking is free and plentiful, with lots at both ends of the park and street parking along Shelter Island Drive. The park welcomes visitors from 6AM to 10:30PM daily.

Good to Know

You can find public restrooms that are generally well-maintained, however be aware that some stalls lack doors (a quirky detail worth knowing before you go). Your four-legged friends are welcome to join you, but dogs must remain leashed during your visit. The park's beauty is partly thanks to dedicated volunteers who tend to the flowers and bushes.

With its beautiful waterfront setting, recreational options, and easy access to downtown San Diego, Shoreline Park provides an excellent escape for everything from solo reflection to family adventures - all with the calming presence of water nearby.
