About the Location

A Hidden Urban Retreat

Situated in southeastern San Diego, Chollas Lake Park spreads across 60 acres of refreshing green space. At its heart lies a 16-acre reservoir with an interesting history - originally built in 1901 as part of San Diego's early water supply system, it found a new purpose in 1966 when the city's Department of Park and Recreation took over. By 1971, they'd transformed it into something special: a youth fishing lake that continues to serve the community today as a natural haven amid the urban landscape.

Around the Water

The lake itself is the star attraction, encircled by a 0.8-mile dirt path that's well-suited for a leisurely stroll, morning jog, or bike ride. Magnificent eucalyptus trees line the trail, casting cool shadows that make outdoor activity pleasant even on warmer days.

What makes this spot truly unique is its status as the only youth-only fishing lake in San Diego County. Kids 15 and under can fish completely free of charge - a rare opportunity in today's world. The fishing pier offers a prime spot for young anglers to try their luck at catching catfish and other freshwater species.

Exploring Nature

If you venture beyond the lake itself, you'll discover additional hiking trails winding through the surrounding urban canyon. These paths offer a chance to stretch your legs while taking in the diverse plant life that includes both native species and introduced varieties.

The landscape here is surprisingly varied, with open meadows, wooded areas, and chaparral-filled canyons all within a short walk of each other. Wildlife is abundant - keep your eyes peeled for the ducks, geese, squirrels and numerous bird species that make their home around the water.

Places to Play and Relax

Scattered throughout the park, you can find picnic areas complete with tables and BBQ grills - some right by the water, others nestled more privately among the trees. Larger groups can use the covered picnic areas, but you might need to reserve these in advance.

If you're bringing kids along, the playgrounds are sure to be a hit. The largest play area sits at Gloria's Mesa, with additional playgrounds closer to the lake. There's thoughtful age-separation, with dedicated spaces for toddlers (ages 2-5) and older children. Don't miss the whimsical tree stumps carved into faces that create a sense of wonder for young explorers.

Staying Active

Fitness buffs will appreciate the outdoor exercise equipment positioned along the eastern section of the path. There's something refreshing about working out surrounded by nature rather than gym walls.

Fancy shooting some hoops? The park's basketball court provides space for pickup games or practicing your jump shot. With so many different activity options, it's easy to find your own favorite way to enjoy this versatile space.

Community Connection

Year-round, Chollas Lake Park comes alive with various community programs. You might catch fishing clinics teaching youngsters the basics, nature walks guided by knowledgeable rangers, or reading programs that combine literature with the great outdoors. Seasonal events add extra charm - from holiday caroling around the lake to springtime egg hunts.

If you're interested in learning more about the natural environment, keep an eye out for the educational hiking tours occasionally offered by park rangers. These walks provide fascinating insights into local plants, including their traditional medicinal uses and other interesting ecological facts.
