Historical Background
Grant Hill Park is a 2.93-acre public park located in the Grant Hill neighborhood of San Diego, California. Originally known as Mount Gilead, the area was purchased in 1906 by Ulysses S. Grant Jr., son of the 18th U.S. President, who renamed it U.S. Grant's Hill as a memorial to his father.
The park's development was a gradual process spanning several decades. In 1940, the city purchased the summit area for under $3,000 and developed it into the current Grant Hill Park. This acquisition was the result of a community campaign led by the Golden Hill Improvement Association.
