Brooks Park
About Brooks Park
Breathtaking Panoramas
Perched on the southwestern-most hill in San Francisco, Brooks Park is a secluded place in the Merced Heights neighborhood. This unique hilltop spot offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, the distant Farallon Islands, and Mount Tamalpais rising beyond the bay.
From this elevated vantage point, you can take in the surrounding cityscape - Parkmerced's distinct layout, the bustling San Francisco State University campus, serene Lake Merced, and a patchwork of San Francisco neighborhoods stretching toward the horizon. The park's sunset views are particularly impressive.
A Piece of History
The story of Brooks Park goes back to the 1920s when the Brooks family claimed this half-acre hilltop as their home. In 1978, the space transformed into public parkland, eventually growing to its current size.
Long before it became a park or family home, this area was considered the countryside outskirts of San Francisco. Dig even deeper into history, and you'll discover that the Ohlone Indians once used this very spot as a camping ground before making their way to Lake Merced for fishing expeditions.
Natural Wonder
While you won't spot any grizzly bears, elk, or foxes that once roamed these hills, Brooks Park still boasts impressive biodiversity. The landscape preserves some plants historically used by Native Americans, including beautiful wildflowers like Ithuriel's spear and the purple clusters of blue-dicks.
If you're into bird watching, bring your binoculars - the varied vegetation creates habitats for numerous species, making this a good urban birding location.
Community Heart
On the east side of the park, a thriving community garden lets locals grow their own vegetables and flowers. It's a nice example of neighborhood collaboration.
When hunger strikes, head to the picnic area where 3-4 tables, several benches, and a barbecue grill await. You can enjoy your meal while taking in the panoramic city views.
Kids haven't been forgotten - a small playground area features three swings (including one designed for babies), providing just enough entertainment for the little ones.
The park also hosts regular environmental education programs, with monthly work parties organized alongside the Natural Areas Program and California Native Plant Society to restore native plants and preserve this special ecosystem.
Know Before You Go
Brooks Park is compact - you can walk through it in about 15-20 minutes - but don't let its size fool you. Despite being surrounded by city life, it maintains a peaceful atmosphere that feels removed from the urban environment.
Four-legged friends are welcome, but you'll need to keep them leashed to protect the sensitive habitat areas off the paved paths. Note that there are no public restrooms available, so plan accordingly.
Regardless of whether you're seeking a quiet spot for meditation, a quick nature fix, or simply a different perspective on San Francisco, Brooks Park offers a refreshing escape from the everyday without having to leave the city.
