About the Location

Natural Oasis

Pine Lake Park is a scenic urban park located in the southwestern part of San Francisco, California. The park is contiguous with Stern Grove and features an elongated valley with steep, forested slopes.

At its heart lies Pine Lake, one of the few remaining natural lakes in San Francisco, fed by the same aquifer as nearby Lake Merced.

Ecological Significance

The lake and its surroundings provide a vital habitat for various plant and animal species. Willow, tule, and other wetland plants encircle the lake, creating an ecosystem that supports both resident and migratory birds.

Pine Lake serves as an important stopover for birds on the Pacific Flyway, with over 250 species observable throughout the year.

Recreational Trails

A trail encircles the lake, offering visitors opportunities for bird watching and connecting to a larger network of paths that wind through Stern Grove. The park includes a segment of the Bay Area Ridge Trail.

The park's landscape is dominated by eucalyptus trees, which were planted by the Greene family in the late 19th century when they owned the property.

Historical Background

Pine Lake Park has a rich cultural history dating back to 1847 when the Greene family purchased the land. The area, including the lake (then known as Laguna Puerca or Pig Lake), was acquired by the City of San Francisco in the years following 1932.

This acquisition expanded the adjacent Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove.

Urban Retreat

Today, Pine Lake Park serves as a tranquil retreat for San Francisco residents and visitors alike. It offers a blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities in an urban setting.
