Cayuga Park
About Cayuga Park
Hidden Urban Oasis
Tucked away in San Francisco's Outer Mission neighborhood, Cayuga Park feels like a secret you've stumbled upon by accident. This 4-acre retreat sits snug between residential homes, the I-280 freeway, and BART tracks - an unlikely spot for tranquility, yet somehow it works. Yes, BART trains rumble overhead, but spend a little time here and it's surprising how quickly that urban soundtrack fades into white noise as you explore this charming space.
Artistic Transformation
The story of Cayuga Park is really the story of Demetrio Braceros, a Filipino immigrant who worked as a gardener for the city's Recreation and Park Department. In 1986, his bosses gave him a simple but daunting assignment: take this neglected patch of land and "change the atmosphere."
And change it he did. Over the next twenty years, Braceros transformed what was essentially a barren plot into a lush, artistic wonderland. His legacy lives on most visibly through the wooden sculptures that have become the park's signature feature.
Wooden Sculpture Garden
Walk through Cayuga and you'll encounter nearly 400 carved figures scattered around the grounds. These aren't your typical park decorations - Braceros crafted them largely from wood he found on-site, turning discarded tree parts into art that ranges from celebrities and athletes to religious figures and scenes from everyday life.
There's something magical about following the "Garden of Eden" pathway with its Biblical carvings, or pausing at the thoughtful September 11 memorial flower bed. Half the fun is that many sculptures hide partially within the greenery, creating a sort of artistic treasure hunt. You could circle the park multiple times and still spot carvings you missed before, each area having its own distinct personality thanks to these wooden guardians.
Modern Amenities
Beyond its artistic elements, Cayuga got a significant upgrade in 2013 with a $9.4 million renovation project. The centerpiece was a new 2,500-square-foot clubhouse with clean lines and modern amenities.
Families appreciate the revamped children's play area that caters to kids from toddler age through pre-teens, including an impressive climbing structure that beckons the adventurous. If you're into sports, the freshly refurbished basketball and tennis courts offer quality surfaces for your game. Throughout this modernization, careful attention was paid to preserving and restoring Braceros's cherished sculptures.
Walking and Dog-Friendly
One of the simple pleasures here is the walking loop that circles the main field - fantastic for a peaceful stroll or a light jog. Dog owners particularly love this path for exercising their four-legged friends, as the park welcomes well-behaved dogs. For those seeking a bit more nature, smaller hiking paths branch off from the main trail, with wooden sculptures keeping you company along the way.
Community Space
Today, Cayuga Park serves the neighborhood as a place where art, nature, and recreation blend together. What makes it special isn't fancy facilities or manicured lawns (though it is well-maintained), but rather those whimsical wooden figures that seem to watch over the space, giving visitors something unexpected around every corner.
Finding parking can be a bit tricky - you'll mostly find street spots along the road above the park - but that's a small price to pay for this well-kept urban retreat. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 10PM, and yes, there are clean restrooms in the clubhouse when nature calls.
