Mariposa Park
About Mariposa Park
A Butterfly-Inspired Haven
Found in the Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco, Mariposa Park spans 2.5 acres of thoughtfully designed urban greenspace. Created alongside the UCSF Russell Benioff Children's Hospital, this park represents a peaceful retreat for hospital patients, medical staff needing a break, and neighbors looking for a bit of nature in the city.
One of the park's most charming features is its one-seventh mile walking path that traces the shape of a butterfly wing - a nod to the park's name (mariposa means butterfly in Spanish). You can only fully appreciate this clever design element from above, either from an aerial view or by peering down from the hospital's upper floors.
Echoes of the Past
We love how Mariposa Park honors its industrial roots. The area's waterfront heritage gets a stylish tribute through a trellis constructed from locally salvaged timbers and steel I-beams. This thoughtful design mimics the railroad roundhouse tracks and turntable that once occupied this space - a subtle reminder of what came before.
Nature in the City
The park features native plant species that create a habitat for birds and beneficial insects. The landscaping thoughtfully includes plants associated with the Mission Blue butterfly, an endangered local species that gives the park an extra layer of ecological significance.
The designers didn't just make things pretty - they made them practical too. The park incorporates vegetated swales and other low-impact techniques that help manage stormwater naturally. The result is a quiet green space that offers some separation from the urban environment, despite being right next to the hospital.
Kid-Friendly Fun
Children visiting the park will find play features that follow the theme of butterfly metamorphosis. Colorful egg spheres, caterpillar balancing balls, a web cocoon climber swing, and flight lift-off mounds offer creative play opportunities that are both fun and subtly educational. These playful elements can be enjoyed by young patients from the children's hospital during their stay.
Everyday Comforts
Mariposa Park includes plenty of picnic areas with various seating options scattered within the grounds. Whether you're a hospital employee having lunch outside, a visitor waiting between appointments, or a local resident enjoying some sunshine, these spots offer comfortable seating.
Dog owners will be happy to know the park is dog-friendly, so your four-legged friends can enjoy the outdoors alongside you. While the green spaces and recreational areas are ample, note that there are no public restrooms available in the park, so plan accordingly before your visit.
