About Corona Heights Park

Breathtaking Vistas

Tucked between the Castro and Corona Heights neighborhoods of San Francisco, you can find Corona Heights Park - a 16-acre urban oasis that packs a punch despite its modest size. This peaceful escape sits just south of Buena Vista Park, bordered by Flint Street, Roosevelt Way, and 16th Street.

The crown jewel of Corona Heights is undoubtedly its rocky summit, where you're rewarded with panoramic 360-degree views of the city. From up here, you can see the downtown skyline, Bay Bridge, Twin Peaks, and the bay spreading out in all directions. Starting at about 300 feet above sea level, the climb takes you to an impressive 520 feet at the peak.

This viewpoint is particularly beautiful at dawn or dusk. It's also a prime spot for catching New Year's Eve fireworks. Just a heads-up: it gets seriously windy at the top, so layer up and hold onto your hat (and phone)!

A Rocky Past

Before becoming a peaceful escape from city life, Corona Heights had a much noisier existence as a quarry and brick factory in the 1800s. The Gray Brothers ran the quarry until 1915, digging up Franciscan chert bedrock to make bricks.

Today, those distinctive red chert rocks and dramatic cliffs stand as silent reminders of the park's industrial heritage.

Trails Worth Your Steps

A network of hiking trails crisscrosses the park, including a one-mile path that spirals around the hill to the summit. The trails are mostly stable dirt paths, though some sections can be steep, with wooden box steps helping out in the challenging parts.

You'll come across multiple routes to the top suited for different fitness levels. Some entrances offer gentler inclines than others, while the path near the 15th Street tennis courts delivers a more vigorous challenge with steep terrain and loose gravel.

Watch your step on stone paths, especially after rain when things get slippery. Don't worry about time commitment - most hikers reach the summit within 3 minutes from the dog park entrance, making this an excellent quick nature fix during a busy day.

Natural Wonders

In springtime, Corona Heights transforms with carpets of wildflowers painting the grasslands - checkerbloom, California poppy, footsteps of spring, Douglas iris, mule's ears, and Johnny jump-up all make appearances.

Keep your eyes peeled for native reptiles like northern and southern alligator lizards and garter snakes sunning themselves on the rocks. Look up and you might spot red-tailed hawks circling overhead, along with common ravens and various songbirds. And yes, those rumors about coyotes lurking in the tall grass? They're occasionally true.

Play & Relax

At the base of the hill, you'll discover several recreational options including tennis courts, basketball courts, and pickleball courts for when you're feeling sporty. Scattered picnic tables offer perfect lunch spots, including a charming circular log arrangement ideal for small gatherings.

Dog lovers particularly appreciate the fenced dog park with its wood chip ground cover that keeps mud at bay during rainy seasons. There's even a separate enclosed area for pups who need extra containment. Four-legged friends are welcome within the park on leash, making this a popular spot for the canine crowd and their humans.

The Randall Museum: A Bonus Treat

At the park's base sits the Randall Museum, a free community museum that adds an educational dimension to your visit. Focusing on science, nature, and the arts, it's a hit with families and school groups alike.

Inside, you'll come across fascinating exhibits on ecology, animals, and San Francisco's geology. The mini zoo and café with healthy options and an outdoor deck round out the experience nicely.
