McKinley Square
About McKinley Square
Historic Setting
Nestled in the Potrero Hill district of San Francisco, McKinley Square is a charming neighborhood park with quite a bit of history behind it. Named after President William McKinley, this little green space has been around since the late 1870s and holds its place as one of the city's 22 historical parks.
You'll find this park at the intersection of Vermont, San Bruno, and 20th streets, where it offers views of the Mission district, the San Francisco skyline, and Sutro Tower. It's become something of a neighborhood living room for the local community and happens to be in one of SF's rare warm microclimates.
Recreation Areas
The park breaks down into three distinct zones, officially called Designated Park Areas (DPAs). First up is a children's playground that came to life in 1999 thanks to local families rolling up their sleeves alongside the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department.
This fenced area creates a safe haven for families with kids under 9. It's fully gated to keep curious unleashed dogs out, and there's a sweet community vibe where parents often leave toys for everyone to enjoy.
The second section offers a multi-use open space with turf, benches, and some pretty spectacular viewpoints. Just remember that city rules require dogs to be leashed here so everyone can enjoy the space peacefully.
The third zone - locals call it the western hillside - spans about 2 acres and acts as an off-leash paradise for dogs. This area keeps much of its natural, rustic character with a mix of native and non-native plants along walking paths. It's quite the social scene for dog owners who gather while their furry friends romp freely on the hilltop.
Trails and Views
Small winding trails meander along the hillside, revealing impressive panoramic views of San Francisco. Magnificent evergreen trees stand like sentinels on the hill's edge, perfectly framing the city vista below.
Just a heads up - these trails cover some pretty steep terrain, so watch your step while exploring. The effort pays off with views that make this secluded area popular with photographers and anyone looking for a peaceful perspective on the city.
Amenities and Facilities
If you're planning to spend some time here, you'll come across several picnic tables next to the grassy lawn area, plus benches scattered along the walkways. These spots are convenient for picnics while enjoying the park's scenery.
One thing to note: there aren't any public restrooms here, so plan your visit accordingly. Despite the lack of restrooms, the park is well-used by both locals and visitors.
Community Involvement
What keeps McKinley Square so lovely is a combination of city maintenance and dedicated volunteer work. The Friends of McKinley Square Park, a neighborhood advocacy group, regularly organizes Corporate Days of Service, bringing in volunteers to help with upkeep and restoration projects.
Local trivia: the park is also known as the home of BYOBW (Bring Your Own Big Wheel), a quirky and cherished community event that takes place on the hillside.
