Salesforce Park spans 5.4 acres of carefully curated greenery stretching across nearly four city blocks. Since opening in August 2018, this rooftop space has become popular with both locals looking for a lunch break sanctuary and tourists seeking something uniquely San Francisco.

Gardens That Tell Stories

Wandering through Salesforce Park feels like taking a botanical world tour without ever leaving the city. The park houses an impressive 600 trees and 16,000 plants thoughtfully arranged into 13 distinct botanical zones. Each area showcases plants that thrive in the Bay Area's climate while representing different ecosystems from around the globe.

A meandering path stretching about half a mile loops around the park's edge, offering a fantastic route for a quick stroll or a contemplative walk. As you make your way around, you'll come across informational plaques identifying the various plant species - it's essentially a compact arboretum floating above the city.

Design That Wows

At the center of the park, you'll discover a plaza featuring an oculus surrounded by a serene bamboo grove. This area also boasts the largest exterior walkable glass floor in the United States, letting you peer down into the transit center below - a slightly dizzying but definitely cool experience.

The design combines contemporary architectural elements with natural beauty. You'll find spaces for activity and movement, alongside quieter corners for relaxation.

Water Dancing with Buses

Perhaps the most captivating feature in the park is the "Bus Fountain" created by local artist Ned Kahn. This 1,200-foot-long water installation combines art and engineering - sensors detect buses moving through the transit center below, triggering jets of water that follow their movement. It's an interesting feature that adds a playful element to the space.

If you're visiting with kids, there's a modest children's play area with climbing structures and soft surfaces for safe play. While not huge, it provides enough entertainment to keep the little ones happy while you catch your breath on a nearby bench.

Beyond Pretty Plants

Salesforce Park also hosts various activities throughout the year. You might find yoga classes, Zumba sessions, educational workshops, or cultural performances depending on when you visit.

When hunger strikes, you can grab something from the beer garden, coffee shop, or various food vendors scattered across the park. There's even a small library stocked with books and art supplies, plus board games and card decks available for anyone to use - meant for an impromptu afternoon of fun.

Places to Pause

The park offers plenty of spaces to simply exist and enjoy the surroundings. Sprawl out on grassy lawns for an urban picnic, or grab one of the many benches or chairs scattered throughout. At one end, an amphitheater occasionally hosts small performances, adding some cultural spice to the park's offerings.

Finding Your Way Up

Getting to this elevated paradise is half the fun. You can take practical routes via elevators, escalators, or stairs from street level. Or, for a bit more flair, hop on the free gondola that glides upward from Salesforce Plaza - it's a brief but delightful ride that sets the tone for your visit.

The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 8PM, making it accessible whether you're an early bird seeking a peaceful morning walk or looking for a serene spot to unwind after work. Clean restrooms near the elevators make it comfortable for longer visits.

A Different Kind of City Experience

One notable aspect is how quiet it is up here. Despite being surrounded by skyscrapers in downtown, the elevation creates a buffer from street noise, giving you a peaceful spot where the city hum fades into the background.

One thing to note: while humans of all types are welcome, your four-legged friends will need to stay home unless they're service animals. This no dogs policy helps keep the gardens pristine and ensures everyone can enjoy the space comfortably.
