About the Location
A Piece of San Jose History
Situated in San Jose's Northside neighborhood, Backesto Park is a green oasis with roots stretching back more than 75 years. This 10-11 acre urban retreat wasn't just randomly placed - it came to life in 1890 when Anne Backesto donated $30,000 to the city in memory of her husband, John Pierre Backesto, a doctor who made his mark on 19th-century San Jose.
Landmarks Worth Noticing
Walk through the park and you'll come across a beautiful tiled memorial fountain honoring the Backesto family. Installed back in 1922, it's actually the oldest surviving creation from the Solon and Schemmel Tile Company, a name that tile enthusiasts in California would recognize immediately.
What might catch your eye first, though, are the magnificent large oak trees that spread their branches across the grounds. They create these perfect pockets of shade that make even the warmest San Jose days bearable - ideal for anyone looking to escape with a book or enjoy a lazy afternoon picnic.
Get Your Game On
For those looking to stay active, Backesto offers several options. The well-kept tennis courts were renamed in 2017 after Don Johnson (not the Miami Vice actor, but a cherished local tennis coach and community figure).
The park features basketball courts, handball walls, a volleyball court with a net, and a baseball field for weekend games. Soccer enthusiasts will appreciate the designated areas with goal frames ready for action.
Kid-Friendly Spaces
The recently upgraded playground is a hit with families, featuring modern equipment that keeps children of various ages entertained. Little climbers can test their skills on the rock climbing wall, while parents appreciate that portions of the play areas are shaded - a thoughtful touch during those sunny California afternoons.
Picnic Paradise
Gathering with friends? The park offers several BBQ areas and picnic tables scattered across the grounds. These spots operate on a first-come basis, including one larger BBQ pit that's perfect when your "small get-together" suddenly includes your entire extended family.
Community Living Room
Backesto really functions as the neighborhood's outdoor living room. You'll see locals walking their dogs (on-leash only), people tossing frisbees across the open green spaces, and impromptu kite-flying sessions when the breeze is just right.
The restrooms are cleaned daily (always a plus for a public park), and you'll come across waste bins conveniently placed throughout. Open from 6AM to 10PM daily, the park accommodates both early birds and night owls.
Community Celebrations
Year-round, the park transforms for various events. The highlight might be the Luna Park Chalk Art Festival, which brings thousands together as artists turn pavement into canvas.
Occasional farmers markets and community gatherings help bring neighbors together, creating a sense of community within this corner of San Jose.
