About the Location

Inclusive Play for All

The Rotary PlayGarden is a unique and inclusive playground located in San Jose, California. Opened in May 2015, this 4.5-acre park was designed as a place where children of all abilities can play together.

The PlayGarden was a $6 million project initiated by the Rotary Club of San Jose as their centennial gift to the community.

Accessible Design Features

Situated in the Guadalupe River Park and Gardens, the PlayGarden features a variety of play structures and elements that cater to children with different physical and cognitive abilities. The design incorporates standard play equipment alongside adaptive features, ensuring that all children can enjoy the space equally.

Some of the notable features include wheelchair-accessible swings, a merry-go-round, and climbing structures.

Nature-Inspired Theme

The park's layout is inspired by the nearby estuarine slough, with a design motif that includes waving grasses, flowing water, and animals moving through water and air. This natural theme creates an environment that is both visually appealing and stimulating for children.

The PlayGarden also includes educational elements, such as an amphitheater for shows and storytelling, and exposure to various plant varieties.

2023 Expansion

In June 2023, the Rotary PlayGarden was expanded to include additional features. The expansion added new all-inclusive play elements for children of all ages and abilities, including a labyrinth, an upside-down tree, willow arbor, nature play areas, motion play areas, and zip lines.

The expanded area also includes new picnic spots and additional plantings.

Community Support

The PlayGarden is maintained through a partnership between the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy, community volunteers, and members who support its upkeep, programs, and staffing. Since its opening, the park has welcomed over 950,000 visitors, making it a popular destination for families in the San Jose area.
