Calabazas Park
About Calabazas Park
BMX Paradise
If you're into cycling, you're in for a treat at Calabazas Park. It's home to one of the largest city-funded BMX courses in the Bay Area, drawing wheel enthusiasts of all skill levels. The course features a sweet pump track with various jumps that's perfect whether you're just starting out or have been riding for years. Just remember that the track operates from an hour after sunrise until an hour after sunset, and you might find it closed after rain when the ground's too soggy.
Playgrounds
Kids have plenty of options here with multiple playgrounds designed for different age groups. You'll come across all the classics - swings, monkey bars, ladders, and climbing structures - all kept in good shape and ready for little adventurers.
One standout feature is the small rock climbing facade that seems to be a magnet for the more daring kids. While you won't find much shade over the play areas, that doesn't stop them from being busy hubs of activity throughout the day.
Sports Facilities
Beyond the BMX track, this 17.2-acre park is packed with options for the sports-minded. You can serve it up at the sand volleyball court, shoot some hoops at the basketball courts, or play a match at the tennis courts (which conveniently have pickleball lines). There's also an unlighted softball field that doubles as a soccer field with the right permit.
Tennis players and pickleballers can coexist peacefully here - the courts convert to six pickleball courts with portable nets available on-site. For something more laid-back, try your hand at the horseshoe pits or spread out on the spacious grassy field that's excellent for casual games or just tossing a frisbee around.
Picnic Areas
When it's time to refuel, Calabazas Park offers several options. The park features several picnic areas complete with barbecue pits and shade-providing pergolas - ideal for family gatherings or birthday celebrations.
You can reserve some picnic areas in advance, while others work on a first-come, first-served basis. And if you're just looking for a quick break, you'll find benches and tables scattered across the grounds.
Park Amenities
Practical needs aren't forgotten here. Restroom facilities are conveniently located near the basketball courts, and water fountains (including dog-friendly ones) are available throughout the park.
There's a nice network of walking paths winding through the grounds, including a section along Calabazas Creek that makes for a pleasant stroll. As for parking, you've got options with both a dedicated lot and plenty of street parking available.
Dog-Friendly Space
Four-legged friends are welcome at Calabazas Park, however they need to stay on leash. The extensive walking paths and open areas make it a great place for dog walks, and the leash rule makes sense given how many little ones are usually running around.
Park Overview
Open 24/7, Calabazas Park is a versatile community space in San Jose. With its wide range of amenities spread across spacious grounds, there's something here for everyone - toddlers, teens, adults, and seniors alike.
It's conveniently located across from a public library, making it easy to combine some outdoor time with other community resources. Weekends and evenings tend to draw crowds, but the park is big enough that you can usually find your own little corner to enjoy whatever activity brings you there.
