Great Oaks Park
About Great Oaks Park
Park Overview
Nestled in San Jose, California, Great Oaks Park spreads across 12.3 acres of recreational space that's ready to welcome visitors of all ages. You'll discover this green location tucked away in southeastern San Jose, just east of Snell Road and south of Hellyer Park.
Sports Facilities
If you're into staying active, Great Oaks offers several options. The park houses a skate park that's actually the only one on the south/east side of San Jose - a little local treasure for skaters. The concrete is mostly smooth, though heads up: you might notice some cracks in the mini ramp. No matter if you're practicing tricks or just having fun, there's something for every skill level here.
Basketball enthusiasts can shoot hoops at one of the two basketball courts, and there's an unlighted softball field for casual games. Soccer fields exist too, but note that they're reserved for permit holders only. The park's open grassy areas also make for a nice spot to practice your rollerblading skills.
Children's Areas
Kids have their own dedicated spaces here, thoughtfully divided into two age-appropriate sections: one for the littles aged 2-5 and another for the bigger kids aged 5-12. While the playground equipment isn't the newest on the block, it's still perfectly functional and provides plenty of fun for young visitors.
Picnic Amenities
Feeling hungry after all that play? Great Oaks offers 5-6 picnic tables with benches and barbecue facilities where you can grill up some lunch or dinner. These spots operate on a first-come, first-served basis - no reservations needed (or accepted). It's a nice way to enjoy a meal outdoors or gather with friends without too much advance planning.
Walking and Recreation
For those who enjoy a good stroll, there's a walking track that loops about 3/4 of a mile around the park. It's great for getting in some steps or enjoying a leisurely walk. The generous grassy areas scattered throughout the park provide ample space for dogs to play or for impromptu games of frisbee or catch.
Visitor Information
When nature calls, you'll find separate men's and women's restroom facilities available in the park. They're functional, but they could use some TLC in the maintenance department.
One thing to keep in mind: parking can be a bit tricky. The park is surrounded by residential areas, so you'll mostly be limited to street parking around the perimeter. It might take a little circling to find a spot during busy times.
