About the Location
Park Overview
Next to Highway 101 in San Jose, Hellyer County Park spreads across 178 acres of urban greenspace. This location in Santa Clara County's regional park system is split down the middle by the gentle flow of Coyote Creek, creating a natural dividing line through the park.
The park was created to give locals a place to breathe and play. Just know there's a $6 daily parking fee if you're driving in, though visitors with disabled placards can park for free.

Cottonwood Lake
Cottonwood Lake sits at the heart of Hellyer, a human-made oasis that's become the park's centerpiece. The lake is stocked with catfish and bluegill year-round, making it good for anglers whether you're a pro or just starting out.
Around the lake, you'll discover plenty of picnic tables and BBQ pits, ideal for an afternoon cookout. The water draws quite a crowd of ducks and geese too, adding a bit of wildlife theater to your lakeside experience.

Picnic and BBQ Areas
Scattered throughout Hellyer are numerous picnic spots complete with tables and grills, many nestled under the shade of mature trees - a blessing on those hot California days.
While some smaller areas work on a first-come basis, the larger gathering spaces need to be booked ahead of time. Each area is kept clean with plenty of trash bins nearby, so it's easy to leave no trace after your outdoor feast.

Velodrome
Perhaps the most unexpected feature at Hellyer is the Hellyer Park Velodrome. This Olympic-sized cycling track with its banked concrete curves hosts both serious races and casual riders. It's a unique attraction that adds some sporting flair to the park and draws cycling enthusiasts from all around the Bay Area.

Playground and Water Features
Kids absolutely light up at Hellyer's impressive playground setup. The main attraction? A towering 30-foot-high play structure complete with an enclosed slide, bridges, swings, and a challenging cargo-net climbing course.
Right next door, you can find a rock-formation splash pad that comes alive with jets, waterfalls, and sprinklers once the temperature hits 70 degrees - excellent for those warm days. The littlest visitors haven't been forgotten either, with a toddler-specific area featuring sand play, age-appropriate climbing equipment, and even musical elements.
These play areas benefit from some strategic shade and are kept in great condition, making them a go-to spot for families, especially during summer.

Trails and Nature
If you're looking to stretch your legs, the Coyote Creek Trail won't disappoint. This paved pathway stretches an impressive 15 miles from Hellyer all the way to Anderson Lake County Park - ideal for hiking, jogging, or cycling adventures.
For something more educational, check out the self-guided nature trail with its informative signs about local flora and fauna. The well-maintained paths make it easy to enjoy a peaceful stroll while connecting with the natural world around you.

Amenities and Facilities
You'll come across clean restrooms around the park, regularly maintained and equipped with running water. Some even offer changing stations for families with little ones.
Four-legged friends are welcome too - just keep them leashed in the main park areas. If your pup needs to burn some energy, head to the dedicated dog park sections where they can run free, with separate areas for different-sized dogs to ensure everyone plays nice.
With its mix of recreational spaces, natural beauty, and practical amenities, Hellyer County Park offers something for just about everyone. Regardless of whether you're planning a family BBQ, a solo trail run, or just need some green space to unwind, this San Jose park offers plenty of options without having to leave the city.
