A Glimpse of Prune History

This little 0.5-acre green space marks the former site of City Gardens, a nursery started by Louis Pellier back in 1850. A French transplant with a green thumb, Pellier introduced California's prune industry - yes, the humble prune has quite the legacy here.

Pellier Park, near San Pedro Square in San Jose, honors the Pellier family who brought plums and prunes to San Jose in the 1800s and significantly influenced the region's agricultural scene. It's interesting to think how one family's horticultural experiment had such an impact on Santa Clara Valley's economic development.

Cleverly Designed (Like a Plum!)

Look at Pellier Park from above and you'll notice something delightful - it's actually shaped like a plum! This creative nod to the French prune that Pellier introduced is thoughtfully executed. The park's central gathering area forms the "pit," while pathways and seating create the "flesh" of this symbolic fruit. Tree-lined berms serve as the "leaves" and do double-duty by buffering traffic noise. There's even a northern paseo lined with flowering trees representing the plum's "stem." It's a design with purpose that cleverly incorporates the park's history.

Fresh New Look

After undergoing major renovations, Pellier Park reopened on October 18, 2023, with a refreshed vibe. Now you'll come across layers of palms and shade trees around the edges, with beautiful flowering trees running through the middle. One of the coolest features is the "storytelling wall" along the northern edge. It chronicles the Pellier family's journey, the agricultural history that shaped the valley, and memories shared by community members. The renovation has turned this formerly overlooked space into an urban retreat that connects you to San Jose's heritage.

Seasonal Charm

Come springtime, the park bursts into color with gorgeous cherry blossoms. These flowering trees add a touch of seasonal magic and create a peaceful natural backdrop amid the surrounding urban landscape. If you're a fan of spring blooms, it's definitely worth timing your visit accordingly.

What to Expect

Don't come expecting playground equipment or sports facilities - at roughly 50 ft x 50 ft, Pellier Park is all about quiet moments. You'll discover comfortable benches scattered throughout for relaxation and contemplation, plus a table if you want to enjoy a coffee or quick lunch. Note that there aren't any BBQ pits or fire facilities available. This is very much a pocket park designed for peaceful breaks rather than active recreation - well-suited for downtown workers seeking a moment of calm during a hectic day.
