Overfelt Gardens Park
About Overfelt Gardens Park
Park Origins
Situated in the Alum Rock district of East San Jose, Overfelt Gardens Park spans a generous 33 acres of green space. The park has a heartwarming backstory - in 1959, Mildred Overfelt donated the land as a tribute to her pioneering parents, William and Mary Overfelt, who were among San Jose's early settlers.
The gates officially opened to the public in 1966, providing a natural retreat in the urban landscape.

Natural Features
Unlike high-energy recreation areas, Overfelt Gardens is designed for slow living and quiet contemplation. The park's winding pathways lead you around three interconnected percolation ponds that naturally rise and fall throughout the seasons. These water features are thriving ecosystems hosting diverse birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and fish.
The landscape here is wonderfully varied, with gardens flowing into wooded areas and open spaces. This diversity contributes to the park's tranquil atmosphere. The abundance of birds makes this a particularly great spot for birdwatching - bring your binoculars if you have them!
Chinese Cultural Garden
Perhaps the most distinctive feature of Overfelt Gardens is its Chinese Cultural Garden, a 6-acre section added in 1971. Wandering through this area, you'll discover several cultural landmarks including the ornate Friendship Gate, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, Chiang Kai-shek Pavilion, and an impressive statue of Confucius.
A notable feature is the massive 15-ton black marble stone from Taiwan - a gift from San Jose's sister city, Tainan. In spring, the cherry blossoms bloom, adding splashes of pink to the cultural landscape.

Additional Attractions
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the California Native Plant and Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can get acquainted with local flora and fauna. There's also a fragrance garden with aromatic plants that add another sensory dimension to your visit.
History buffs might enjoy seeing the historic Overfelt House still standing on the grounds - a reminder of the property's past life as a dairy farm. And if you're looking to combine outdoor time with some reading, the park is conveniently located near a library.

Amenities
Amenities include: You can find clean restrooms available within the park grounds, along with designated picnic areas shaded by mature trees - fantastic for a casual outdoor lunch.
Visiting by car? No worries about parking fees - free parking is available for visitors. The network of paved, shady paths across the park provides comfortable walking spaces even during warmer months.
Park Rules
To maintain the peaceful atmosphere, note that sports activities and alcohol consumption aren't permitted within the park. And if you're bringing your four-legged friend along, remember to bring bags and clean up after them - it's all about keeping this serene space beautiful for everyone.
