Park Overview
Penitencia Creek County Park is a 163-acre linear park and regional trail located in San Jose, California. The park incorporates parklands and open space managed by several agencies, including Santa Clara County, the City of San Jose, and the Santa Clara Valley Water District.
Trail System
The park features a four-mile trail that follows Penitencia Creek, beginning at the City of San Jose's 720-acre Alum Rock Park and extending westward through residential neighborhoods of Berryessa and Alum Rock until it joins Coyote Creek near Berryessa Road. While some portions of the trail are still undeveloped, a majority is open for public use and enjoyment.
From White/Piedmont Roads to the Jackson/Mabury area, the trail is mostly continuous, with on-street crossings at Capitol Avenue and Jackson Avenue. The paved sections of the trail are suitable for various activities, including hiking, bicycling, and skating.
Amenities and Features
The park also includes Penitencia Creek Gardens, a 15-acre area that provides opportunities for strolling, exploring, and picnicking.
The parkway offers scenic views of the surrounding hills, which are particularly verdant during the spring months. The creek itself serves as a natural feature, enhancing the park's aesthetic appeal and ecological value.
Regional Connections
Penitencia Creek County Park is part of a larger vision to create a continuous trail connecting Alum Rock Park to the Coyote Creek confluence, offering residents and visitors an extended green corridor for recreation and nature appreciation in the urban environment.
