About the Location
Park History
River Oaks Park is a 5.2-acre public green space located in the Rincon district of North San Jose, California. Established in 2013, the park was developed on the former site of a Sony manufacturing facility, transforming industrial land into a valuable community asset.
Design and Layout
The park's distinctive crescent shape follows the curve of River Oaks Parkway, an important thoroughfare in the area. Its design balances active recreational areas with quieter, nature-focused zones.
Natural Features
The park preserves a significant number of mature trees, including 75 Redwoods, 4 Cottonwoods, and a Heritage Valley Oak, which help to ground the space in its local landscape and provide natural shade.
Environmental Innovation
River Oaks Park incorporates innovative stormwater management features, such as bridged bioswales, which treat runoff on-site and serve as both functional and aesthetic elements. This approach to low-impact design has earned the park recognition for excellence in treating stormwater as an amenity.
Accessibility
The park is strategically located within walking distance of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's River Oaks transit station, making it easily accessible to both local residents and visitors from the wider San Jose area.
