Location and Overview

Near the Hensley Historic District on the northern edge of downtown San Jose, Ryland Park is a pleasant 3.2-acre green space that has become a favorite gathering spot for locals looking to escape the urban hustle without leaving the city.

Historic Swimming Pool

The Rotary Ryland Pool is a highlight of the park. Dating back to the late 1920s, this circular swimming pool has been cooling off San Jose residents for generations. With depths ranging from 2 to 5 feet, it's perfectly sized for younger swimmers to splash around safely.

Over the years, the pool has received some TLC through renovations while carefully preserving its historic charm - including those beautiful Batchelder tiles that line the edge. During summer, you can enjoy free swimming sessions with lifeguards on duty, plus there are shaded areas and benches where you can catch your breath between dips.

Recreational Facilities

If swimming isn't your thing, don't worry - Ryland Park has plenty more to offer. The basketball courts often buzz with friendly competition, adding an energetic vibe to the park atmosphere.

Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the exercise course with its fitness station equipped for pull-ups, dips, and other bodyweight exercises. It functions as a mini outdoor gym in the neighborhood - no membership required.

Playgrounds

Kids have two good playground options here. The larger playground area features a variety of swings and slides that keep older children entertained for hours.

For the little ones, there's a separate gated toddler area with adorable play structures including miniature cars and buildings. Parents can breathe a little easier knowing the play areas are covered with soft composition surfaces to cushion any tumbles during enthusiastic play sessions.

If your dog prefers a more structured walk, the spacious grassy areas offer plenty of on-leash strolling opportunities. Just remember that outside the designated dog runs, leashes are required.
