Features and Size

Preisker Park is one of Santa Maria's most substantial parks. Preisker Park stretches across nearly 40 acres at the city's northern edge, making it the largest green space in town. This sprawling park offers a variety of recreational options.

The one-mile walking path that loops around the perimeter has become something of a morning ritual for local fitness enthusiasts. Early risers dot the trail daily, getting their steps in before the day truly begins. Beyond the path, expansive grassy fields open up plenty of possibilities - impromptu soccer matches, football games, or simply finding a great spot to launch a kite on a breezy afternoon.

Natural Environment

The park features an impressive variety of trees. With over 100 different tree species around the grounds, Preisker Park offers considerable botanical diversity. Bird watchers might get lucky spotting the Lawrence's Goldfinches that nest here, adding splashes of yellow among the branches.

There used to be a charming little pond near the pirate ship playground, however it's currently dry. If you chat with longtime locals, many will reminisce about watching frogs and other small creatures that once made this small water feature their home.

Family-Friendly Amenities

Kids have plenty of room to burn energy here. Multiple playgrounds are scattered throughout the park, including an ADA-accessible playground that ensures fun isn't limited to any child. The play structures cater to different age groups, so both toddlers and older children can find their perfect play spot.

The star attraction for many young visitors is the replica Santa Maria ship complete with cannons. This unique play structure has sparked countless imaginary pirate adventures over the years. Don't be surprised if you overhear parents pointing it out to their children with, "I used to play on that ship when I was your age!"

Recreation Opportunities

Sporting types will find their niche here too. An 18-hole disc golf course winds through the entire park, offering a decent challenge whether you're a seasoned pro or just learning to fling a disc. For those with more traditional tastes, the horseshoe pits provide a slower-paced alternative.

The park's open spaces, including some gently rolling hills, host everything from casual frisbee tosses to organized events. On any given weekend, you might stumble upon soccer tournaments, bicycle marathons, or even classic car shows spread across these green expanses.

Gathering Spaces

The vintage-style gazebo stands as a quaint landmark and offers a shady spot to catch your breath or have a quiet conversation. For larger get-togethers, several group picnic areas can be reserved in advance, many nestled under the canopy of mature trees that provide natural shade on hot days.

The BBQ facilities are a major draw here. Beyond the standard grills scattered throughout, there's an impressively large open pit BBQ well-suited for authentic Santa Maria-style barbecue. Weekends transform the park into something of a community festival atmosphere, with multiple family gatherings, the unmistakable aroma of grilling food, and occasionally, impromptu concerts from visitors who've brought along guitars or other instruments.

Facilities and Accessibility

The parking situation is generally good, however you might need to circle around on busy weekends or when events are happening nearby. Public restrooms are available, however their condition can be hit-or-miss depending on when you visit.

Dogs are permitted in the park. Your four-legged friends must stay leashed, but the walking trails are lined with doggy bag dispensers, making it easy to clean up after your pet while enjoying a stroll together through the park.
