About Nagasawa Community Park

Park Overview

Tucked away off Fountaingrove Parkway in Santa Rosa, California, you'll come across Nagasawa Community Park - a sprawling 33.23-acre green sanctuary that rarely draws crowds. This tranquil space provides a peaceful spot for both solo visitors and families looking for some quiet time away from daily routines. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 9PM, with plenty of parking available for all.

Natural Features

What makes this park special is its diversity of landscapes. Wander through forest paths, explore chaparral areas, or sit beside the serene pond that acts as the park's centerpiece. This variety of environments means you're likely to encounter different plants and animals depending on which section you explore.

The lake draws fishing enthusiasts hoping to reel in some bass (though we should mention the catches can be hit or miss). If you're into water activities, there's a convenient boat ramp where you can launch kayaks or canoes for a peaceful paddle.

In spring, wildflowers dot the landscape, adding vibrant colors to the park's natural beauty. Nature lovers will appreciate the abundance of wildlife habitats within the grounds.

Historical Significance

Beyond its natural beauty, Nagasawa Park has a fascinating story to tell. Back in the 1870s, this area was home to the Brotherhood of the New Life, a Utopian community established by Thomas Lake Harris.

By the early 1900s, a remarkable man named Kanaya Nagasawa - one of the first Japanese immigrants to America - became the owner of 1,500 acres in the Fountaingrove area. His property included vineyards and a winery, and he became known for his hospitality toward Japanese visitors.

The park was officially dedicated as Nagasawa Community Park at Fountain Grove during a public ceremony on July 28, 2007, honoring this important figure in local history.

Recreation

While not extensive, the walking paths offer a pleasant way to explore the park's diverse landscape. Note that they don't completely circle the lake, so don't expect a full loop trail.

Many visitors come specifically for the fishing area, hoping to catch bass from the lake's waters. If you're bringing your own small watercraft, there's an accessible boat ramp for launching onto the water.

Across the grounds, you'll discover picnic areas with benches offering lovely views - perfect spots to enjoy a packed lunch or simply sit and soak in the surroundings. Some people have found this to be an ideal place for quiet meditation or just catching their breath away from life's demands.

Facilities

The parking lot is generous, starting at the metal entrance gate and winding along a gentle slope that dips down before rising again.

As for restrooms, you should know there's just a porta-potty available - you might want to plan accordingly if that's not your preference.

The park borders a golf course, separated by a fence that runs alongside one of the walking trails.
