Juilliard Park
About Juilliard Park
Historic Origins
Found in Santa Rosa sits a spot with deep roots in the city's past. Once home to the Juilliard Family, this 9-acre oasis became public property in 1931 when Frederic Juilliard donated it after moving east to New York. The park's thoughtful design comes from the talented hands of Howard Gilkey, an Oakland landscape architect with Santa Rosa childhood memories of his own. Fun fact: the park's development provided much-needed jobs during the Depression as a government project.
Natural Beauty
Step into Juilliard Park and you're immediately embraced by nature's diversity. Towering redwoods stand like silent sentinels while graceful weeping willows drape their branches, creating pockets of cool shade great for summer afternoons.
A gentle creek meanders through the grounds, connecting to a charming pond with water lilies and a fountain that adds a soothing soundtrack to your visit. If you look closely, you might spot tiny fish, tadpoles, or even the occasional duck or turtle going about their day. The park's stone bridges and walkways, built with rock from nearby Kenwood quarries, invite you to wander and discover hidden corners of this urban sanctuary.
Recreation and Amenities
Whether you're feeling active or just need a peaceful escape, Juilliard offers options for both. The bocce ball courts buzz with friendly competition from local players and leagues throughout the year. Green thumbs will appreciate the thriving community garden where seasonal plantings flourish - the sunflowers in August are particularly impressive!
Families will find a small playground where kids can climb, swing, and play in the sand. The wide, open grassy areas are great for picnic blankets, frisbee games, or impromptu volleyball matches. And yes, your four-legged friends are welcome too, although they'll need to stay on leash.
Cultural Significance
Beyond its natural beauty, Juilliard Park is an important part of Santa Rosa's cultural scene. Summer Sundays come alive with the Live at Juilliard Summer Concert Series, where free, family-friendly performances draw crowds from late July through August.
The park's event calendar stays busy year-round, from the rumbling engines of the Father's Day Car Show with its classic American automobiles to the vibrant colors and traditions of the Matsuri Festival. These gatherings weave the diverse threads of Santa Rosa's community into a tapestry of shared experiences.
Location
As one of Santa Rosa's oldest parks, Juilliard holds a special place in the city's landscape. You'll discover it nestled in downtown's SOFA (South of A Street) district, an area known for its walkable streets and artistic character.
The park's central location puts you just steps away from Railroad Square and the Santa Rosa Plaza, making it an ideal spot to catch your breath during a day of urban exploration. After strolling through the park, you can easily continue your adventure at nearby shops, restaurants, and coffee spots that give downtown Santa Rosa its distinctive flavor.
