About the Location
Historic Origins
Originally the site of the Juilliard Family home, the park was gifted to the city in 1931 by Frederic Juilliard after he moved to New York. The park's design, created by Oakland landscape architect Howard Gilkey (who grew up in Santa Rosa), was developed during the Depression era as a government project.
Natural Beauty
The park spans 9.09 acres and offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational facilities. Juilliard Park features old growth trees, including magnificent redwoods and graceful weeping willows that provide ample shade, creating a pleasant environment for visitors.
The park's landscape includes a creek that meanders through the grounds and a pond with water lilies and a fountain, adding to its scenic appeal. Visitors might spot small fish, tadpoles, and occasionally ducks or turtles in these waterways. Stone bridges and walkways, constructed using rock from the Kenwood quarries, enhance the park's aesthetic charm and provide interesting paths for strolls.
Recreation and Amenities
Juilliard Park offers various recreational opportunities for visitors of all ages. The park features bocce ball courts that are actively used by local players and leagues. There's also a community garden that flourishes with seasonal plantings, including impressive sunflowers in August.
For families, there's a small playground with climbing structures and sand play areas. The expansive grassy areas are perfect for picnics, frisbee games, volleyball, or simply relaxing under the shade of the trees. The park is also dog-friendly, though pets should be kept on leash.
Cultural Significance
The park plays a significant role in Santa Rosa's cultural life. It hosts the annual Live at Juilliard Summer Concert Series, a free, family-friendly event that takes place every Sunday from late July to the end of August.
Throughout the year, Juilliard Park hosts various community events, including the popular Father's Day Car Show featuring classic American automobiles, and cultural festivals like the Matsuri Festival. These events contribute to the city's vibrant community spirit and arts scene.
Location
Juilliard Park is one of Santa Rosa's oldest parks, located in the heart of downtown Santa Rosa, California. It's part of the eclectic and historic downtown area, situated in the SOFA (South of A Street) district, known for its walkability and quirky flair.
