About the Location

Historic Site Overview

Strathearn Historical Park is a historic site that offers visitors a glimpse into the area's rich past. The park is owned and maintained by the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District and operated in conjunction with the Simi Valley Historical Society.

The centerpiece of the park is the Simi Adobe-Strathearn House, which once served as the headquarters of Rancho Simi, a land grant given by the Spanish government. Built between 1892 and 1893, the house remained in the Strathearn family until 1969 when it was donated to the Simi Valley Recreation and Park District.

Museum Exhibits and Historic Structures

Strathearn Historical Park is an open-air museum featuring several historic structures that represent Simi Valley's past. Visitors can explore the Simi Adobe, which is the oldest structure in Simi Valley.

Throughout the park, visitors can find various historical structures and exhibits, including the Printz/Powell Colony House, Strathearn Windmill, Currier Apricot Pitting Shed, Wood Ranch Barns, and a Pioneer Memory Garden. Many of the buildings are original and well-preserved, containing authentic historical artifacts, furniture, and clothing that help tell the story of early settlement in the area.

The park also features a gazebo area and a chapel that are particularly popular for weddings and special events. The historic barn provides a venue for receptions and community gatherings, often decorated with lights for evening events.

Tours and Educational Opportunities

The park offers docent-led tours on Fridays at 1 PM and on Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30 PM. These guided tours cost $5 and allow access to the interiors of the historical buildings. For those who prefer a self-guided experience, a free audio tour is available during the park's open hours, accessible by scanning a QR code at the main gate or by the Visitors Center.

Knowledgeable docents provide information about the Chumash people, the original inhabitants of the area, as well as the history of the property, land, buildings, and settlers. This makes the park an excellent educational destination for both children and adults interested in local history.

Visitor Information

The Visitor's Center contains various displays pertaining to the history of Simi Valley. These exhibits are regularly updated, providing repeat visitors with new insights into local history. The center also offers videos on Simi Valley's history for viewing.

Entrance to the park grounds is free, with ample free parking available. The park is clean and well-maintained while still preserving its historic charm. For those interested in local history, books on Simi Valley's past are available for purchase.

Special Events

Strathearn Historical Park hosts various community events throughout the year that showcase the park's unique character. The annual barn sale is particularly popular among locals, offering vintage and historical items for purchase.

During the Christmas season, the park is beautifully decorated and features choir performances, visits with Santa, and holiday treats. Other special events include concerts by the Simi Valley orchestra and choir, Día de los Muertos celebrations, and educational workshops on various topics.

The park is also a popular venue for weddings and receptions, with the historic buildings and grounds providing a charming backdrop for special occasions.
