A Natural Oasis in Stockton

The 10-acre man-made lake at the heart of Shumway Oak Grove Regional Park attracts a steady parade of ducks, geese, and birdwatchers, and you'll likely spot plenty of both waddling around the shoreline during your visit. The lake anchors a 180-acre oak forest in Stockton, California that offers a genuinely peaceful retreat from city life.

Exploring the Trails

Winding through ancient oaks, the park's 1.5-mile path lets you immerse yourself in nature's embrace. There's also a quarter-mile trail that's accessible for visitors with mobility challenges. These paths provide a nice nature experience, however we should mention that the serenity is occasionally interrupted by sounds from the nearby freeway in some sections.

Fun on Land and Water

If you enjoy fishing, the park has options for you. The lake is stocked with catfish and trout during certain seasons, and there's an annual Trout Bout tournament that attracts fishing enthusiasts. When the weather warms up, you can take to the water by renting paddleboats or aqua cycles - a fun way to explore the lake from a different perspective.

For disc golf enthusiasts, the park has two 18-hole disc golf courses that wind through the oak grove. If you're just starting out or have been playing for years, these courses offer a beautiful backdrop for your game.

Perfect for Gatherings

The park offers plenty of picnic spots equipped with tables and BBQ grills, many shaded by magnificent oak trees. If you're planning a larger gathering, you'll discover several covered picnic areas available too.

Kids won't be bored with children's playgrounds scattered across the grounds, giving them space to burn off energy while you relax. The park also features a youth campground where organized youth groups can experience overnight camping adventures.

Discover the Oak Grove Nature Center

The Oak Grove Nature Center offers an educational addition to your park visit. Here, you can learn about local wildlife, native plants, and explore fascinating collections of rocks, minerals, and fossils. The center also provides insights into the history of the Miwok and Yokuts indigenous peoples who once called California's Central Valley home.

The Nature Center welcomes visitors on weekends from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Keep in mind there's a parking fee that varies depending on when you visit.

Good to Know Before You Go

You'll find clean restrooms across the park, particularly near the Nature Center and playgrounds. For special occasions, consider renting the Boathouse - it's a unique lakeside venue with its own dock that makes for memorable gatherings.

Dog lovers can bring their four-legged friends for an additional $1 per dog, but remember they must stay leashed. Note that some trails are marked as dog-free zones to protect the natural environment.

The entrance fee is $5 on weekdays and $6 on weekends (cash only). The park opens daily from 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM.
