Sunnyvale Baylands Park
About Sunnyvale Baylands Park
Natural Beauty and Landscape
Nestled along the shores of San Francisco Bay, Sunnyvale Baylands Park spans an impressive 177 acres of diverse terrain. The park blends 70 acres of developed parkland for recreational activities with 105 acres of protected wetlands where nature remains undisturbed.
The park embraces its natural surroundings with native grasses and some truly breathtaking views of the bay. If you're up for exploring, there are plenty of pathways to wander, including access to the San Francisco Bay Trail - a network connecting 300 miles of shoreline trails throughout the region.
Fair warning: that bayfront location means it can get pretty breezy here! While that makes it a paradise for flying kites and drones, you might want to toss a light jacket in your bag even on those sunny California days.
Recreation and Amenities
The park features six spacious picnic areas that can be reserved individually or combined for bigger events, suitable for both casual family picnics and larger gatherings. Each spot comes equipped with large BBQ grills and circular seating that makes conversation easy. Some areas offer welcome shade too - either from trees or built structures - which you'll appreciate during summer months.
For those planning something more formal, the Baylands Grove Amphitheater offers an outdoor turf venue that's excellent for special occasions.
If you've got kids in tow, you'll discover four playgrounds scattered within the park with all the essentials: swings, slides, and jungle gyms to keep the little ones entertained. Sports enthusiasts haven't been forgotten either, with multi-use fields available for impromptu games.
Clean restrooms are conveniently located around the grounds - always a plus when spending the day outdoors.

Activities and Wildlife
The trails here are a hit with locals looking to stretch their legs. The outer loop measures almost exactly one mile, making it great for tracking your walking or jogging progress without needing to constantly check your fitness app.
Here's something cool - Baylands is one of the few Bay Area parks that allows drone flying in designated areas. You'll often spot enthusiasts with their drones and model airplanes taking advantage of the open space and consistent winds. Just remember that the protected wetlands are off-limits for drone flights.
Speaking of those wetlands, they're a genuine treasure for wildlife spotting. The park sits along the Pacific Flyway, making it a hotspot for birdwatching. Bring your binoculars and you might catch glimpses of everything from elegant shorebirds to various waterfowl depending on the season.
Visitor Information
There's a $6 vehicle entry fee from March through October, but if you visit during the winter months (November through February), you can get in for free. If you find yourself returning regularly, the $25 annual pass might save you some cash.
You'll come across plenty of parking across the park, so accessing your favorite areas shouldn't be a problem.
One important note: to protect the natural ecosystem and wildlife, dogs aren't allowed within Baylands Park - even on leashes.
Whether you're looking to exercise on the trails, enjoy a peaceful nature walk, or host a gathering, Baylands provides a natural retreat within the bustling Bay Area tech scene.
