About the Location

A Naval Past Meets Peaceful Present

Situated on the former Mare Island Naval Base in Vallejo, Alden Park is a circular space where history and nature come together. At its heart stands a charming 19th-century bandstand or gazebo, surrounded by an unexpected mix of military artifacts and serene greenery.

Dating back to the 1860s, this isn't your average neighborhood park. It owes its name to Navy commander James Alden, who had a rather brilliant idea - he asked ship captains to bring back trees from their worldwide voyages. Talk about an early global plant exchange program!

A Living Arboretum

The results of Alden's horticultural vision are still thriving today. As you wander through, you'll spot an impressive variety of trees - elm, apple, bay, olive, apricot, locust, fig, and towering eucalyptus. Some of these giants have been standing watch since the park's earliest days, creating a tranquil atmosphere that feels worlds away from city life.

If you're into birdwatching, keep your eyes peeled for the Ospreys that make seasonal appearances, among other feathered residents. And during certain seasons, the park transforms into a subtle mushroom showcase with interesting varieties popping up along the pathways.

Weapons Through Time

What makes Alden Park truly unique is its outdoor museum of naval weaponry spanning two centuries. Around the perimeter, you'll encounter everything from Civil War-era torpedoes and cannons to a German World War II submarine and Cold War missiles.

The showstopper? A massive 28-foot intercontinental ballistic missile that once was deployed from nuclear submarines maintained right here at Mare Island. Historical statues and artifacts scattered throughout provide glimpses into Mare Island's significant naval past.

You'll also notice some intriguing bunkers in the park - while you can't go inside (they're sealed), they add another layer to the historical landscape.

Taking a Break

Regardless of whether you're looking to relax or have a picnic, you'll discover benches and tables across the park, particularly on the Ferry side of Mare Island. Planning something more substantial? There's a BBQ area well-suited for small gatherings.

Dog owners, you're in luck - this is a particularly dog-friendly spot, with locals regularly walking their four-legged friends along the quiet pathways. It's an ideal place to stretch your legs while absorbing a bit of history.

Need facilities? The nearby Coal Shed houses clean restrooms and Quarters, a coffee shop that locals rave about.

Present-Day Charm

Alden Park functions today as both a memorial to Mare Island's naval history and a green space. Since the Navy left in the 1990s, some areas have taken on a slightly wild, unmanicured character, but that only adds to its authentic charm.

The park rarely feels crowded. You'll have space to wander, reflect, and even spot Coast Guard ships docked nearby - a fitting modern connection to the park's maritime roots.
