About the Location
Natural Setting
Arroyo Verde Park is a sprawling 132-acre natural preserve and recreational resource located in Ventura, California. The park features a diverse landscape, with 14 acres of tree-lined open grass areas nestled within relatively rugged terrain.
Situated in a dried-up river valley, the park's entry gate can be found at the intersection of Ventura's Foothill and Day Roads.
Hiking Opportunities
The park offers visitors a variety of outdoor experiences, from easy strolls along the creek to more challenging hikes up into the hills. Several miles of hiking trails wind through the park, providing opportunities for exercise and exploration.
One notable trail is the 3.5-mile-long Arroyo Verde Park Trail, while another path known as "The Wall" is renowned for its steep incline. During spring, the trails are lined with colorful wildflowers and butterflies, making for a particularly scenic experience.
Trails range from beginner-friendly flat paths to more advanced routes with steep, winding sections. On clear days, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of the Channel Islands, downtown Ventura, and the Fillmore mountains.
Dog-Friendly Environment
Arroyo Verde Park is popular among dog owners. Dogs are permitted off-leash Tuesday through Sunday from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, making it an excellent spot for early morning exercise with your furry friend. Outside of these hours, dogs must be on leash while enjoying the trails and open areas.
Please note that dog waste disposal stations are available throughout the park to help keep the grounds clean and enjoyable for all visitors.
Family-Friendly Amenities
Arroyo Verde Park is not just for hikers and nature enthusiasts. It's a popular spot for families, offering multiple playgrounds for children, including a new inclusive play area opened in April 2022.
This 10,750 square foot play area is Ventura's first fully inclusive playground, designed for youth of all abilities. It features a colorful play surface, new landscaping, gathering areas, swings, hammocks, balance beams, a sensory garden, a motion-inclusive carousel, embankment climbers, and music play areas.
The park actually offers two distinct playground areas: one near the front entrance that's ideal for toddlers and younger children, and the larger inclusive playground toward the back of the park that accommodates children of all ages and abilities, including wheelchair access.
Picnic and Recreation Areas
The park provides numerous picnic tables and BBQ grills scattered throughout the grounds, making it an ideal location for family gatherings, birthday parties, and outdoor celebrations. Many of the picnic areas are beautifully shaded by the park's mature trees, creating comfortable spaces even on warm days.
Large grassy areas offer plenty of room for casual sports and games. The park also includes baseball fields and volleyball areas for more organized recreational activities.
Facilities and Access
Clean restrooms are available in multiple locations throughout the park. Drinking fountains can be found near the main areas, though bringing your own water is recommended, especially for hiking.
While parking is free on weekdays, there is a $3 fee for parking on weekends and holidays (cash only). The park is open daily from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Seasonal Beauty
During spring, the park comes alive with an array of colorful wildflowers, some blooming up to three or four feet tall, and butterflies fluttering throughout the area. After rainy periods, the landscape becomes particularly lush and vibrant.
