About the Location
Park Overview
Kellogg Park is a 2.4-acre community park located in the Westside neighborhood of Ventura, California. The park, which opened to the public in April 2018, was developed as part of a collaborative effort between the City of Ventura, the Trust for Public Land, and local community members.
The park offers a peaceful setting with beautiful mountain views and is known for being generally clean and family-friendly. Its thoughtful design incorporates a variety of features that appeal to visitors of all ages.
Walking Trails and Stormwater Management
The design of Kellogg Park is centered around a quarter-mile looped walking trail that encircles the park's main features. This paved path is perfect for walking, running, or riding bikes, with many visitors enjoying evening strolls with their dogs.
A notable element is the natural "river" stormwater swale, which functions as both an aesthetic feature and a practical component of the park's infrastructure. This swale is designed to detain and infiltrate runoff from large storm events, helping to alleviate local flooding issues and improve runoff water quality.
Play Areas
The park's layout includes distinct areas for various activities. There are two separate playground areas: one designed for children aged 2-5 years and another for those aged 5-12 years.
These play areas are divided by a ridge feature that offers additional climbing opportunities. The park also features a "Jack-and-Jill" artificial-turf slide hill, which is particularly popular with children who bring boxes to slide down the grassy slope.
Many visitors note that the playground is quite spacious, giving children plenty of room to explore and play. The playgrounds are well-maintained and suitable for children of all ages.
Fitness Zone
Kellogg Park features a fitness area with several workout stations and exercise equipment that are free for public use. This makes the park a great destination for those looking to combine outdoor recreation with physical fitness.
The dozen or so workout machines placed around the park allow visitors to engage in strength training and other exercises while enjoying the fresh air.
Community Spaces
For community gatherings, Kellogg Park offers a multi-generational area equipped with beanbag toss games and game tables. A small amphitheater with varied seating serves as both a performance space and the terminus of the park's stormwater infrastructure.
The amphitheater's stage doubles as a public art piece, incorporating a pebble mosaic created by local artist Kevin Carman.
There are numerous picnic tables scattered throughout the park, as well as grassy areas where visitors can spread a blanket for a picnic. These spaces offer comfortable settings for meals and social gatherings.
Sustainability Features
Sustainability is a key aspect of Kellogg Park's design. The park utilizes native plantings, minimal turf, and water-efficient irrigation to reduce water demand.
These features, combined with the stormwater management system, reflect the park's commitment to environmental responsibility.
Community Gardens
Along the northern boundary of the park, there are small community garden plots, providing local residents with the opportunity to grow their own produce and foster a sense of community engagement.
The community garden is particularly well-maintained and adds to the park's visual appeal, serving as a point of pride for the neighborhood.
Amenities
The park includes public restrooms for visitor convenience, though some users note they may not always be well-stocked with supplies. Water fountains are available for both people and dogs, with a lower fountain approximately 4 inches high specifically designed for canine visitors.
Parking is generally easy to find, making the park accessible for those arriving by car. The park's design includes dog waste bag dispensers to help pet owners keep the grounds clean.
