Andrews Arboretum

History and Origins

Established in 1948 by Maud Reed, a former botany teacher at Boulder High School, the arboretum was named after Darwin M. Andrews, a local horticulturist.

In 1989, the City of Boulder's Parks and Recreation Department acquired the arboretum, and it is now managed by the Forestry Division.

Location and Size

Andrews Arboretum is a small, tranquil green space located in the heart of Boulder, Colorado. Situated on the east side of Broadway between Grandview and Marine Streets, this compact arboretum spans approximately 32,000 square feet (about 0.73 acres).

Features and Amenities

The arboretum features a diverse collection of plant life, including native evergreens, cultivated shrubs, groundcovers, and exotic trees. Visitors can explore the park via unpaved walking paths that wind through the carefully curated landscape.

Benches are strategically placed along the central path, offering quiet spots for relaxation or outdoor lunches.

Community Value

While relatively small in size, Andrews Arboretum serves as an important green respite in Boulder's urban environment. It provides a space for nature enthusiasts, casual visitors, and students to observe and learn about various plant species.

Future Plans

As of 2025, the arboretum is on the Parks and Recreation planning list for renovation, indicating potential future improvements to enhance its educational and recreational value for the Boulder community.
