About the Location
A Crossroads of History
Located in west Boulder, The Peoples' Crossing (renamed from Settler's Park in June 2021) carries a name crafted by representatives from federally recognized American Indian Tribal Nations.
This name change recognizes how this land has been an important crossroads for Indigenous Peoples who have called the mountains and plains of Boulder home since time immemorial.
Nature's Canvas
Nestled below the striking Red Rocks formation, this park offers some seriously impressive views of Boulder's iconic Flatirons. These distinctive rock formations create that classic Boulder backdrop you've probably seen on postcards.
The park's network of trails includes the Red Rocks Trails, which meander through warm ochre-colored sandstone spires. As you hike, you'll notice a peaceful creek running alongside portions of the trail, with the gentle sound of flowing water accompanying your walk.
Trails Worth Exploring
If you're looking for a good hike, The Peoples' Crossing connects to several excellent routes including the Anemone Trail and Anemone Loop. These paths feature steady switchbacks with a nice mix of sun and shade - well-suited for those days when you can't decide if you want to work on your tan or stay cool.
The Anemone Trail offers panoramic views of Boulder and the Rocky Mountains - quite photo-worthy. With about 900 feet of elevation gain to the top of Ascension, it's a moderate challenge that offers a less crowded alternative to some of Boulder's more famous hiking spots.
Many of the trails are family-friendly, with paths that even young kids can handle. That said, you'll want proper hiking shoes for the more challenging sections - your everyday sneakers might not cut it here.
A Place of Cultural Significance
Beyond its natural beauty, this area holds deep historical importance. It's generally believed to be where Arapaho Chief Niwot (also known as Left Hand) informed gold seekers in October 1858 that they couldn't remain on Indigenous land as protected by the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie.
Plan Your Visit
The Peoples' Crossing gives you access to Boulder Canyon and the surrounding hills - great for hiking, exploring nature, or simply soaking in those panoramic Boulder views.
There's a dedicated parking lot, but it fills up quickly during popular times. Try to arrive early, especially on weekends, to secure a spot. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 8PM.
You'll discover several picnic tables along the paths where you can take a break or enjoy a meal surrounded by nature. There's also an open grassy area well-suited for relaxing or letting dogs play (just keep an eye out for wildlife).
The renaming of this park reflects Boulder's efforts to honor the area's Indigenous history and implement the city's Indigenous Peoples Day Resolution.
