About the Location
Park Overview
Situated in Centennial, Colorado, Cherry Knolls Park spans a generous 23 acres of public green space that feels like a neighborhood's backyard oasis. The park sits along the Big Dry Creek Trail, offering that perfect blend of natural beauty and fun recreational options.
As you wander through, you'll notice the sprawling grassy fields intersected by the gentle flow of Big Dry Creek itself, creating a pretty backdrop for whatever outdoor adventure you're planning. If you're around during winter, the large grassy hill near the parking lot transforms into a sledding paradise that locals love.
This park really shines in its cleanliness and safety - it's the kind of place where families feel comfortable spending the whole day. Spring and summer bring especially lush greenery, and the creek often runs with enough water to add that soothing natural soundtrack to your visit.
Recreational Facilities
Cherry Knolls doesn't skimp on options for staying active. The park houses several sports fields, including baseball/softball diamonds and soccer pitches where you'll spot youth games in the fall and casual pickup games like ultimate frisbee throughout warmer months.
The thoughtfully designed playground area features two sections - a gentler area for the little ones and a more challenging setup for older kids. You can find swings (including a fun tire swing) and spring toy cars that younger children particularly enjoy climbing on. The play areas stay well-maintained with fresh mulch regularly refreshed.
Need a break? The small gazebo with picnic tables offers an ideal spot to enjoy a packed lunch or gather with friends. And yes, there are clean, permanent restroom facilities that are well-maintained and easy to find across the park.
Trail Connections
One of the park's best features is its position along the Big Dry Creek Trail, making it ideal for walking, jogging, or cycling. The path sees a steady stream of dog walkers (remember to keep your four-legged friends leashed).
If you're feeling a bit adventurous, follow the trail south across Easter Avenue to discover a small fishing pond stocked with bass - a hidden gem many first-time visitors don't know about. During warmer weather, the creek itself features a play structure that both kids and dogs seem to find irresistible.
Access and Amenities
You'll come across the main parking lot off S. Elizabeth Street, however if you're heading straight for the playground, there's convenient curbside parking on E. Easter Avenue that might save you some walking.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6 AM to 11 PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy everything it has to offer.
Upcoming Improvements
South Suburban Parks and Recreation has some exciting upgrades in the works for Cherry Knolls. The existing playground and restroom facilities are slated for renovation, which should enhance the park experience even further.
There are also plans to convert sections of the Big Dry Creek Trail from crusher fines to concrete, creating a more consistent surface throughout the park - good news for cyclists and those pushing strollers.
