About the Location
A Glimpse into History
What was once the town square of Old Colorado City has transformed into Bancroft Park, a space where history meets modern convenience. Nestled in the heart of Old Colorado City historic district, this park has become the go-to gathering spot for locals and visitors alike in Colorado Springs.
What You'll Find Here
The park's bandshell hosts music and events throughout the year, adding character to the historic area. But let's talk about what might seem mundane but is actually quite famous - the self-cleaning restroom facility that opened in 2020.
This isn't your average public bathroom. The facility includes three restrooms (one ADA-compliant) that literally clean themselves after every 30 uses and even ping maintenance staff when they're running low on supplies. Pretty neat, right? These high-tech toilets earned Bancroft Park a rather unusual honor: America's Best Restroom in 2020 from Cintas Corporation. With automatic doors and time limits, they're as convenient as they are clean.
For the little ones, there's a small climbing structure and some interactive musical instruments to bang and clang on. Around the park, you'll find several metal picnic tables great for a lunch break or just watching the world go by.
Green Space and Beyond
The park offers a mix of grassy areas and paved paths, accommodating various activities from picnics on the lawn to casual strolls.
Bring your four-legged friends along - the park is dog-friendly and popular with local pet owners. Mature trees scatter throughout, providing welcome shade during those sunny Colorado days.
Step outside the park and you're immediately surrounded by the charm of Old Colorado City with its art galleries, shops, and restaurants. Need wheels? There are e-bike rentals available right at the park if you're feeling adventurous and want to explore beyond the park boundaries.
When the Community Comes Together
During the year, Bancroft Park transforms for various community gatherings. From June to October, a bustling Saturday Farmers Market takes over the space, offering everything from local produce and baked goods to honey, handmade crafts, and prepared foods. It's a well-attended farmers market in the Springs.
During summer and fall, the bandshell hosts free concerts featuring diverse genres including jazz. If you're around during Territory Days, you'll witness one of the park's biggest events, drawing in vendors and visitors from all around.
When winter rolls in, the park doesn't hibernate - it celebrates with a Christmas tree display and seasonal events like Fallidays that keep the community spirit alive year-round.
