About the Location

Park Overview

Nestled at the intersection of Briargate Parkway and Union Boulevard in Colorado Springs, John Venezia Community Park spans an impressive 110 acres. Opening its gates in 2017, it was the city's first new community park in over a decade - quite the drought-breaker for local recreation enthusiasts!

The park charmingly embraces a ranch theme, with various areas designed to evoke the feel of traditional homestead structures. While thirty acres have been developed for play and sports, the rest remains beautifully natural. One of our favorite aspects? The impressive views of Pikes Peak that create a beautiful backdrop to your outdoor adventures. The park welcomes visitors daily from 5AM to 10PM.

Recreational Facilities

If you're looking to cool off during Colorado's warm months, you'll love "The Watering Hole" - a spacious spray ground featuring more than a dozen water elements that operate throughout summer. This popular splash zone connects to a playground that's universally accessible, ensuring kids of all abilities can join in the fun.

Sports enthusiasts aren't left out either. The park houses multiple soccer and football fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts. The pickleball courts are particularly popular (be prepared for weekend crowds if you're hoping to play a match). There's also an in-line hockey rink for those who prefer wheels to feet. If you have younger kids who might get overwhelmed at the main playground, there's a smaller play area conveniently located near the athletic fields.

Playground Features

The main playground is particularly noteworthy. The spinning rope tower is a unique attraction that draws adventurous climbers, while traditional favorites like slides, swings, and a well-equipped sandbox round out the play options. Perhaps most importantly, the artificial turf surface makes this playground fully accessible for wheelchair users and children with other mobility needs.

Younger explorers have their own designated areas with age-appropriate equipment to ensure safe play. Just a friendly heads-up: the playground surfaces can get quite hot during peak summer days, so make sure your little ones have proper footwear.

Splash Pad

When temperatures climb, "The Watering Hole" becomes the place to be. This seasonal splash pad typically operates during summer months, with water features that playfully cycle on and off throughout the day. Kids of all ages can dash through sprayers and various water elements, creating an excellent solution to beating the Colorado heat.

The artificial turf surrounding the splash pad provides a comfortable spot for families to set up base camp between water play and playground adventures. It's a thoughtful touch that makes transitions between activities much easier.

Picnic Areas and Pavilions

Planning a gathering? The park offers several covered pavilions that you can reserve for events and celebrations. If you're just looking for a casual lunch spot, you'll find numerous picnic tables scattered across the grounds, including a covered area near the splash pad available on a first-come basis.

What we appreciate is how the tables aren't crammed together - the spacious layout gives everyone room to enjoy their outdoor meals without feeling like they're dining with strangers.

Trails and Walking Paths

For those seeking a more relaxed experience, lace up your walking shoes and explore the two miles of interior sidewalks or take a stroll along the Briargate trail that runs alongside Briargate Parkway. Nature lovers might prefer the gravel walking loops in the area known as "The Pastures". These paths attract everyone from dog walkers to fitness enthusiasts looking for scenic exercise routes.

Amenities

The park maintains clean restroom facilities (though be aware they may close during winter months), convenient drinking fountains, and plenty of parking across multiple lots. Just plan accordingly during summer weekends when parking can become scarce as locals flock to the park.

Dog owners will be happy to know the park is pet-friendly, with ample open spaces and trails excellent for walking your four-legged friends - just remember to bring your own waste bags.

Historical Significance

The park bears the name of John Venezia, a former El Paso County Commissioner who made significant contributions to developing parks and trails throughout Colorado Springs. It's a fitting tribute to someone who helped shape the outdoor recreation landscape of the city.
