About the Location
A Glimpse into Denver's Golden Past
Located next to the South Platte River in Southwest Denver, Grant-Frontier Park sits on hallowed ground. This riverside park is the birthplace of Montana City, one of the earliest settlements established during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush of 1858 that would eventually grow into the Denver we know today.
If you're lucky, you might catch modern-day gold panners trying their luck under the pedestrian bridge, keeping the spirit of discovery alive at what's considered the original gold discovery spot in Denver. There's something wonderfully timeless about that connection to the past.
Fresh Face for a Historic Place
In recent years, the park has undergone quite the transformation. What was once a simple riverside space has been transformed into a thoughtfully designed recreational area. The renovation cleverly mirrors the braided channel of the South Platte itself, weaving together different elements of the landscape.
One of the coolest design features is the series of terraces marking flood elevations, which double as a visual guide to the transition from aquatic to riparian to upland ecological zones. It's an interesting blend of education and landscape architecture.
What You'll Find Here
The heart of the park is the Montana City interpretive area, honoring the pioneers who first settled here. The redesign includes a secondary channel that leads to the river, carved naturally from the existing landscape to improve water access.
A concrete jetty extends into the water, with steps making it easy to get close to the river's edge. It's an excellent spot for watching the abundant waterfowl - ducks paddle by year-round, and Canada geese make this their winter home when the colder months arrive.
Not Your Average Playground
Kids will love the nature-themed playground built around 2017. Instead of the typical plastic structures, this play area incorporates large rocks and beetle-kill pine balance beams, bringing a bit of Colorado's natural environment into the play experience.
The playground is thoughtfully divided - one section for the 2-12 crowd and another for kids 5-12. While you won't find swings here, there are plenty of slides, climbing structures, and even a wagon that little ones can scramble over. It's a space that encourages both active play and imagination.
Get Moving
The South Platte River Trail runs right through the park, offering a nearly uninterrupted path from Chatfield Reservoir to Confluence Park and beyond. With minimal road crossings, it's a cyclist's dream and a pleasant route for walkers too.
If you're looking to work up more of a sweat, check out the fitness stations scattered around the grounds. The southern half of the park features a wide-open lawn excellent for throwing a frisbee, and you'll find picnic tables along the riverbank when you're ready for a break.
What to Know Before You Go
Grant-Frontier Park combines historical elements with natural features and modern recreational spaces. Whether you're interested in history, nature, or just need a place for kids to play, you'll find options here.
When you need refreshments, the nearby Table Public House café is a convenient stop. If you're visiting during warmer months, toss some mosquito repellent in your bag - those riverside locations can get buggy. Bathroom facilities are basic (just a portable toilet), but the combination of history and recreation makes it an interesting spot along the South Platte River.
