About the Location
A Natural Playground Paradise
Located in Westminster, Colorado, just a stone's throw from Denver, Westminster Station Nature Play Park offers a refreshing take on outdoor recreation. Since opening in November 2021, this nearly 5-acre park emphasizes accessibility and environmental elements - creating a space where kids can connect with the natural world.
Designed to engage all five senses, this isn't your typical swing-and-slide setup. The park tends to buzz with activity during summer months, so if you're looking for a quieter experience, consider visiting during off-peak hours.
Adventure in Every Corner
The park effectively integrates natural elements into its playground design. Kids can climb tree houses, conquer a mini mountain, wind their way through switchback trails, and channel their inner paleontologist by digging for replica dinosaur fossils.
The playground features custom-built tree forts connected by rope bridges that invite exploration from every angle. The large sand play area comes complete with realistic dinosaur fossils - ideal for budding archaeologists and castle architects alike. (You might want to bring your own sand toys to maximize the fun.)
A highlight of the park is the spiral rock fountain and cascading water feature that operates during warmer months. Unlike traditional splash pads, this natural water play area creates a more organic experience as the water flows toward a peaceful lake. On hot summer days, this feature becomes an instant hit with overheated adventurers.
Comfort and Convenience
There's no need to cut your adventure short due to basic needs. The park includes a generous covered pavilion with plenty of picnic tables - ideal for family gatherings or small celebrations. If you're planning something special, you can even rent the pavilion, which comes with a plumbed-in grill.
Clean public restrooms, including a family-friendly handicap-accessible option, are situated near the pavilion. You'll come across drinking fountains around the grounds and several tables with umbrellas scattered around play areas for when you need a moment in the shade.
Parking is plentiful off Lowell Boulevard, and for those using public transit, the RTD Westminster Station conveniently sits at the park's eastern edge.
Created by Community
An interesting aspect of this park is its origin story. The City of Westminster collaborated with Matrix Design Group and various consultants to bring this vision to life. They involved sixth-graders from Colorado STEM Academy back in 2017 to gather input from children who would eventually use these structures.
The park's development was supported by grants from several organizations, including Adams County Open Space, Great Outdoors Colorado, the Colorado Lottery, and the Westminster Legacy Foundation.
Part of Something Bigger
Westminster Station Nature Play Park isn't just a standalone attraction - it's integrated into the larger Westminster Station Park, which serves multiple functions including regional flood detention while supporting the adjacent RTD Westminster Station.
The park offers urban children a chance to experience nature in ways that differ from traditional playgrounds. One thing to note: since the park is relatively new, many trees are still in their growth phase, which means natural shade can be limited in certain areas. Don't forget your sunscreen and hats during those sunny Colorado days!
