About the Location
River's Edge Retreat
Next to the banks of the Cache la Poudre River, Buckingham Park is a pleasant neighborhood green space where nature and recreation come together. There's something calming about being near water, and this park lets you experience the natural beauty of the Poudre ecosystem without leaving the city.
Whether you're in the mood for activity or just want to lounge around, the park offers options for both. The riverside walking trails make for a peaceful stroll, and if you're into fishing, bring your gear - the river access is a nice perk.
A Glimpse into the Past
There's a cool bit of history here - Buckingham Park sits in an area originally built to house workers from the Great Western Sugar factory back in the early 1900s.
Today's park carries on that legacy, representing a green space for the diverse community that now calls this neighborhood home.
What's Here to Enjoy
Sports fans will appreciate the baseball field and basketball court, while families with kids can head to the playground. Though not massive, the play equipment is newer and does the job nicely.
One of our favorite things about this park is the tall shade trees scattered throughout - absolute lifesavers during Colorado's sunny days. The well-kept grassy areas practically beg you to throw down a blanket and relax with a good book or have an impromptu picnic.
Picnic Paradise
Speaking of picnics, the covered pavilion is perfect when you want to gather with friends but aren't sure about the weather. Several tables are available, and the grilling area means you can cook up something tasty while enjoying the outdoors.
The combination of shade, seating, and cooking spots makes this an ideal location for everything from casual family meals to birthday celebrations during the warmer months.
Good to Know
You'll find clean restrooms on-site, but keep in mind they're typically closed during fall and winter.
Drinking water is available too, so you can refill your bottle when needed - especially handy if you're planning to spend a few hours here.
Neighborhood Heart
This space is popular with locals. It's where neighbors meet, kids play after school, and families unwind on weekends.
The park regularly hosts community gatherings, including a welcoming Saturday food service from 1-3 PM that's open to everyone. These kinds of events really showcase how central this green space is to Fort Collins' community fabric.
Buckingham Park provides a connection to both nature and community - a quiet spot along the Poudre.
