About the Location
A Bit of History
Set in Fort Collins' Trail Head neighborhood, Traverse Park carries a pretty remarkable backstory. This neighborhood haven sits on what used to be the Hartshorn Tree Farm - the very nursery that grew many of the majestic trees now lining Mountain Avenue and Old Town. The mature trees give parts of the park an almost mountain-like ambiance, creating natural shade spots and adding a touch of Colorado's natural beauty.
Thoughtful Design Elements
The heart of Traverse Park features an activity spine that connects different areas - from seating nooks to wall features and playful elements scattered throughout the space.
A loop trail winds around the entire park, great for your morning walk or afternoon stroll. Along this path, you'll find the "Neighborhood Hammock" created by local artist Joe McGrane through the Art in Public Places program. It's become quite the social hangout spot for visitors of all ages.
Play Spaces That Wow
The playground features multiple structures designed with different age groups in mind, including a three-story play tower that offers climbing challenges for older kids. The park also includes a zipline that's popular with children.
The park's pump track provides a spot for children to practice their dirt biking skills. There's also a basketball court and open grassy areas suitable for soccer games or frisbee.
Practical Amenities
The covered picnic shelter has multiple tables for family gatherings or birthday celebrations. Right next to it, you'll come across a barbecue area complete with grills and counter space for food prep.
The park offers clean, heated restroom facilities and drinking fountains for visitors. During winter when the main facilities close, alternative options are typically available.
The Natural Setting
Traverse Park offers views of Long's Peak and the foothills, providing a nice backdrop for outdoor activities. In winter, certain slopes transform into excellent sledding spots for snowy day fun.
Tucked away from busy streets, the park generally maintains a quiet atmosphere. The park balances open spaces and developed features for various activities and different age groups.
From Concept to Reality
Construction began in spring 2021, with Traverse Park officially opening its gates on July 14, 2022.
The park provides outdoor space within walking distance of homes, with options for both passive and active recreation throughout the year.
