About the Location

Stunning Vistas

Found in Lakewood, Colorado, Sunset Park spans a peaceful 21 acres at 10500 W. 12th Ave. This hidden retreat sits perched above Lakewood Gulch, offering a quiet escape from city life with views that make you feel worlds away from urban hustle.

As the name suggests, the park offers beautiful sunsets - grab your camera or just a good friend and find a spot to watch nature's nightly show. There's something magical about how the elevated setting creates an almost private viewing experience despite being in the middle of Lakewood.

Places to Play & Relax

Sprawling grassy areas invite you to spread out a blanket, toss a frisbee, or simply lie back and cloud-watch. These open spaces have become natural gathering spots for families and friends looking to connect outdoors. Need shade? The covered gazebo area offers picnic tables well-suited for everything from birthday celebrations to casual meetups.

Kids will make a beeline for the playground, which includes a jungle gym and safety surfacing to cushion inevitable tumbles. Good news for parents of little ones - Lakewood has been working to make the playground more accessible and safer for all children.

Natural Beauty

One of our favorite features has to be the bubbling brook that meanders through the park. There's nothing quite like the soundtrack of flowing water to help you decompress after a long day. This little stream creates a micro-ecosystem that feels refreshingly wild.

The landscape here offers a surprising variety - open meadows transition to marshy sections and tree-lined areas, all within a relatively small space. Walking paths weave through these different environments, making even a short stroll interesting for both you and your four-legged friends.

Paths & Adventures

The walking trails here are well-kept and thoughtfully designed, looping through fields and wooded areas. They're not challenging, but that's exactly the point - these paths invite leisurely exploration rather than intense hiking.

For those seeking a bit more excitement, head to the eastern section where you'll find dirt jumps that have become a favorite spot for mountain bikers and remote-controlled vehicle enthusiasts. It's an unexpected touch of adventure in this otherwise tranquil setting.

Coming Soon

The park is getting some nice upgrades soon. The current playground surfacing will be replaced with ADA-compliant engineered wood fiber play surfacing, and the access ramp is being redesigned to meet full accessibility standards.

Young visitors will be thrilled to know that new spring toys are on the way to replace some damaged equipment. Construction is scheduled to start in late fall, with everything ready to enjoy by spring 2024.

Community Treasure

Sunset Park is a neighborhood green space where Lakewood residents can play, gather, and reconnect with nature without leaving the city. Dogs are welcome to join you, but you'll need to keep them leashed during your visit.

Note that there are no permanent restrooms on site, and you might need to circle a bit to find street parking. The park welcomes visitors daily from 5 AM until 10 PM.
