About the Location
Historic Significance
Established in 1904, this sprawling 157-acre public space has been a centerpiece of the community for over a century. Located along Goodnight Avenue, City Park offers a diverse range of recreational facilities and natural beauty for visitors of all ages.
Many of the existing structures, including retaining walls and buildings, were built in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). These structures showcase the rustic architectural style popularized by the National Park Service during that era.
Natural Features
The park features a mix of landscaped areas and natural spaces, including large grassy fields and mature trees. Two bodies of water, Horseshoe Lake and Lake Joy, provide opportunities for fishing and add to the park's scenic appeal.
Attractions
City Park is home to the Pueblo Zoo, which occupies a portion of the park grounds. The park also houses a popular amusement area known as "The Rides at City Park", which includes a historic 1911 carousel, a miniature train, and various other children's rides.
These attractions have been a fixture of the park since 1955 and operate seasonally.
Recreation Opportunities
For sports enthusiasts, the park offers numerous facilities including tennis courts, baseball/softball fields, and a disc golf course. The City Park Pool provides a place for swimmers during the warmer months.
Throughout the year, City Park serves as a venue for various community events and gatherings, making it a central hub for recreation and social activities in Pueblo.
